Denning Joins Lady Chaps Staff

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 6, 2012) - Lubbock Christian University athletic director Paul Hise...

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 6, 2012) - Lubbock Christian University athletic director Paul Hise announced that Alex Denning has been named the new women's soccer head coach.

"I am very excited to announce that Alex Denning has accepted the position of head women's soccer coach at LCU," said Hise. "Alex was able to build highly competitive programs at the NCAA Division II level with limited scholarships and funding. We are looking forward to seeing the continued improvement of our women's soccer program under his leadership. The Athletic Department is excited to welcome Alex and his wife Lauren into our family."

Denning comes to LCU after four seasons at the helm of both the men's and women's soccer programs at Arkadelphia, Ark. based Ouachita Baptist University. In the four-year span, he led the men's program to their only two postseason appearances and the women's program to a Great American Conference championship match.

On the women's side, Denning produced a record of 23-33-4. Last season, OBU went 8-9-1 and lost in a shootout to East Central (Okla.) after a 0-0 tie in the conference championship game. He helped the Lady Tigers raise their team GPA from 2.8 to 3.69, which ranked third highest in the nation.

On the men's side, Denning posted a coaching mark of 24-29-4. The 45.6% win percentage is a program best at OBU. The Tigers qualified for the 2010 Gulf South Conference Tournament with an 11-6 record. They carried the GSC Player of the Year on their roster and Denning claimed GSC Coach of the Year accolades. The Tigers also raised their team GPA from 2.34 to 3.45 under the guidance of Denning.

Overall while at OBU, Denning coached 17 all-conference players, including a conference player of the year honoree, and 11 all-region players. His teams also received 71 honors of academic recognition to his players.

Denning is a Boston native, who was an Army Brat who eventually called Mesquite, Texas home. He played as a goalkeeper and eventually attended Ouachita Baptist before a pair of knee surgeries ended his collegiate playing career. While focusing on his academics, Denning spent a semester in Quebec and assisted the coaching staff at Bishops University while also playing semi-professionally with Le Vert. He returned to Arkansas and served as a head coach for the Arkansas Olympic Development Program and as an assistant coach at Arkadelphia High School. Alex is married to Lauren, who served as his assistant coach for both programs at the NCAA Div. II OBU program.

He takes over an LCU program that will mark the 2012 season as the third season in program history. Before resigning to pursue other coaching opportunities, Babak Abouzar led LCU to a pair of Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament appearances and to a combined 14-18-4 record over two seasons.

LUBBOCK, Texas (November 1, 2011) - A 1-1 tie between Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University was all that the Lady Chaparrals needed to clinch a spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, as the one standing point claimed with the tie allowed LCU to clinch the eighth and final postseason spot Tuesday afternoon at LCU Soccer Field. The Lady Chaps will travel to Oklahoma City University Saturday to face the top-seeded Stars in the SAC Tournament opener.

Against WBU, the Lady Chaps took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute with Stacy-Ann Johnson adding to her team-leading totals with her eighth goal of the season. Rebekah Wenger and Ashley Griffis set up the goal for Johnson. Sarah Lauderdale connected on a pass to Jordan James, who scored her seventh goal of the season in the 65th minute to tie the game 1-1. The game would go scoreless the rest of the way.

LCU took an early lead, as Kaylyn Settle scored an unassisted goal 7:32 into the contest. The Lady Chaps would be unable to get another ball past NWOSU goalkeeper Caitlin Thorpe, who stopped six of the seven shots she faced. LCU goalkeeper Allison Brinson produced the same numbers, with six saves on seven shots faced. The game-tying goal by NWOSU was tallied by Denise Rangel in the 49th minute.

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 22, 2011) - Kayla Thompson scored the lone goal to lead No.25 Southern...

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 22, 2011) - Kayla Thompson scored the lone goal to lead No.25 Southern Nazarene University to a 1-0 Sooner Athletic Conference win over Lubbock Christian University Saturday afternoon giving LCU consecutive one-goal losses to ranked opponents.

Southern Nazarene controlled the tempo throughout the game, but LCU aggravated them denying many of their opportunities. LCU freshman defender McKenzie Meynard frustrated 36-goal scorer Jackie Acevedo and LCU did not allow Acevedo to a shot on goal. Acevedo did eventually set up the game winning play, as her throw-in went untouched and to a wide open Thompson, who capitalized with placing the ball past LCU goalkeeper Allison Brinson in the 58th minute. It would be the only goal SNU would tally on their 20-5 shot advantage and 8-1 on-goal advantage.

Brinson, who had seven saves, kept LCU within reach, but the Lady Chaps offense could never get going. The Lady Chaps had a pair of breakaways in which they never were able to garner a shot. Stacy-Ann Johnson, who was not expected to play, checked in during the second half and attempted a free kick on a set-piece and her shot rattled off the crossbar. SNU goalkeeper Rachael Wade received a red card in the 62nd minute after an aggressive challenge outside of the box chasing down a loose ball, allowing LCU to play with a man-advantage for the final 28:02. Their only shot on goal came on a header by Jordin Farris in the final thirty seconds of the contest, which was denied by a defender.

The loss places LCU with a 4-9 record overall and 2-6 in the SAC. SNU improved to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in SAC play. The Lady Chaps go on the road Thursday and play at Oklahoma Christian University.

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 20, 2011) - Lubbock Christian University played solid, but they were unable to match a goal scored by Hollis St. John with 14:20 remaining, as the goal helped No.15 Oklahoma City University avoid the upset bid by the Lady Chaparrals Thursday afternoon at LCU Soccer Field.

Sheridan Horner was able to get the Stars a 1-0 lead collecting a loose ball off a header from teammate Meghan ,McMahon and putting it past LCU goalkeeper Allison Brinson. Jordin Farris matched the goal in the 64th minute after an LCU corner kick attempt resulted in a hand-ball and a penalty kick attempt. Farris scored on the Lady Chaps first penalty kick attempt of the season. LCU had the wind in the second half and it created several scoring opportunities, but Ashley Bechtold, who served as the Stars goalkeeper in the second half, stopped three shots in the half and kept the Lady Chaps from getting a second goal. In the 76th minute, a series of lead passes went right in the Stars favor and passes by McMahan and Horner connected to an open St. John on the left side of the box and she had no problem scoring her first goal of the season and the eventual game-winning goal.

Teams were even with five shots-on-goal apiece, but OCU out-shot LCU overall 13-8. The Lady Chaps fell to 2-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and 4-8 overall. OCU improved their mark to 11-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the SAC. The Lady Chaps remain home Saturday and will host Southern Nazarene University at 1 p.m.
