Lady Chaps Clinch Tournament Spot

By: Chris Due

LUBBOCK, Texas (November 1, 2011) - A 1-1 tie between Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University was all that the Lady Chaparrals needed to clinch a spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, as the one standing point claimed with the tie allowed LCU to clinch the eighth and final postseason spot Tuesday afternoon at LCU Soccer Field.  The Lady Chaps will travel to Oklahoma City University Saturday to face the top-seeded Stars in the SAC Tournament opener.

Against WBU, the Lady Chaps took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute with Stacy-Ann Johnson adding to her team-leading totals with her eighth goal of the season.  Rebekah Wenger and Ashley Griffis set up the goal for Johnson.  Sarah Lauderdale connected on a pass to Jordan James, who scored her seventh goal of the season in the 65th minute to tie the game 1-1.  The game would go scoreless the rest of the way.

LCU out-shot WBU 17-14 overall and 8-5 in shots-on-goal.  Pioneer goalkeeper Courtney Chamber made seven saves in the tie and Lady Chaps keeper Allison Brinson allowed one goal and made four saves.  The Lady Chaps wrapped up the regular season with a rather decent finish.  After a pair of one-goal deficits to ranked Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma City, the Lady Chaps went 1-0-2 to earn standing points in their final three games to clinch.  LCU ends the regular season 5-9-2 overall and 3-6-2 in SAC play, while the Pioneers season comes to a close with a 6-10-2 overall mark and 1-8-2 in the SAC.

The Lady Chaps clinch the SAC Tournament for a second consecutive season.  Last season, LCU was also the eight-seed and travelled to OCU, falling 3-2 to give the Stars a scare in a close contest.
