Lady Chaps Can't Dodge Storm
By: Chris Due
LUBBOCK, Texas (October 22, 2011) - Kayla Thompson scored the lone goal to lead No.25 Southern Nazarene University to a 1-0 Sooner Athletic Conference win over Lubbock Christian University Saturday afternoon giving LCU consecutive one-goal losses to ranked opponents.
Southern Nazarene controlled the tempo throughout the game, but LCU aggravated them denying many of their opportunities. LCU freshman defender McKenzie Meynard frustrated 36-goal scorer Jackie Acevedo and LCU did not allow Acevedo to a shot on goal. Acevedo did eventually set up the game winning play, as her throw-in went untouched and to a wide open Thompson, who capitalized with placing the ball past LCU goalkeeper Allison Brinson in the 58th minute. It would be the only goal SNU would tally on their 20-5 shot advantage and 8-1 on-goal advantage.
Brinson, who had seven saves, kept LCU within reach, but the Lady Chaps offense could never get going. The Lady Chaps had a pair of breakaways in which they never were able to garner a shot. Stacy-Ann Johnson, who was not expected to play, checked in during the second half and attempted a free kick on a set-piece and her shot rattled off the crossbar. SNU goalkeeper Rachael Wade received a red card in the 62nd minute after an aggressive challenge outside of the box chasing down a loose ball, allowing LCU to play with a man-advantage for the final 28:02. Their only shot on goal came on a header by Jordin Farris in the final thirty seconds of the contest, which was denied by a defender.
The loss places LCU with a 4-9 record overall and 2-6 in the SAC. SNU improved to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in SAC play. The Lady Chaps go on the road Thursday and play at Oklahoma Christian University.
