Close to Clinching
By: Chris Due
ALVA, Okla. (October 29, 2011) - The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals and Northwestern Oklahoma State University Lady Rangers played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in Sooner Athletic Conference play Saturday. LCU did not lose any ground trying to clinch a berth into the SAC Tournament, but they missed on a victory, which would have allowed them to clinch.
LCU took an early lead, as Kaylyn Settle scored an unassisted goal 7:32 into the contest. The Lady Chaps would be unable to get another ball past NWOSU goalkeeper Caitlin Thorpe, who stopped six of the seven shots she faced. LCU goalkeeper Allison Brinson produced the same numbers, with six saves on seven shots faced. The game-tying goal by NWOSU was tallied by Denise Rangel in the 49th minute.
The Lady Chaps out-shot NWOSU 18-14 in the match. The tie was the first for LCU this season. It places their record at 5-9-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the SAC. NWOSU moved to 6-10-1 on the season and 2-7-1 in conference. LCU has one regular season game remaining and it is Tuesday at 1 p.m. hosting Wayland Baptist University. If LCU garners a tie or a win, then they will clinch a SAC Tournament berth. If LCU loses Tuesday, they would need NWOSU and Oklahoma Christian, who play each other Tuesday, to tie or for NWOSU to win. NWOSU and OC are the only two teams that could pass or catch LCU for the final seed in the SAC Tournament. LCU holds the tiebreaker against each squad.
