TEMPLE, Texas (March 8, 2011) – The No.13 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals golf team finished in third place in the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Lady Cru Spring Invitational, and Shelbye Hill was the top finisher of the event. Teammate Sinae Montoya finished tied for second place at the event held at Wildflower Country Club.
The Lady Chaps were the top finishing four-year program in the 14-team field. They finished in third place overall with a 669 (337-332) behind McClennan Community College (634) and Western Texas Community College (651). LCU finished ahead of nine four-year programs, which included five NCAA Div. III programs, a pair of NAIA programs and a NCAA Div.II program.
LCU finished third despite having their top two finishers participating independently. Monahans, Texas native Shelbye Hill played independently and she won the individual title with a 154, shooting a 79 and a 75 on the par-72 5,814-yard layout. Also playing independently for the Lady Chaps was Sinae Montoya, who followed an 81 with a tournament best 74 in the second round for a total of 155 to finish tied for second place. Anna Schopp led the Lady Chaps team members with a 162 (82, 80) to finish in 12th place. Kelsey Inman (85-81=166, tied-16th) and Macalee Lane (84-84=168, tied-19th) each finished in the top-20. Additional LCU competitors in the team scoring included Kiersten Pack (86-87=173, tied-27th) and Rachael Dansby (90-87=177, tied for 36th).
It is the second straight tournament the Lady Chaps have participated in that they have produced individual champion. The Lady Chaps opened the spring season winning the University of Texas – Brownsville event with Schopp claiming the individual title in that event. The Lady Chaps have not finished in any worse than third in the spring and fall events they have competed in during the 2010-2011 school year. They will participate in Western New Mexico’s Mustang Intercollegiate beginning March 19 at Albuquerque’s UNM Championship Course.
