LCU Claims First Ever SAC Title

Claremore, Okla. (April 19, 2011) - Lubbock Christian University entered the final round of the 2011 Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Tournament in third place, ten strokes behind defending champions No.2 Oklahoma City University. The No.11 Lady Chaparrals shot 17 strokes better than any other team in the second round at Heritage Hills Golf Course on Tuesday, carding a team score of 320 for a tournament total of 653, and the Lady Chaps claimed their first Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship in program history.
Rachael Dansby led the way as she captured the individual title with a 161 two-day total. Teammate Anna Schoop shot a tournament low 76 in the final round for second place after a scorecard playoff finish. Schoop tied Oklahoma City University’s Madison Haley with scores of 163 each.
Wayland Baptist University’s Nathalia Valencia and LCU’s Shelbye Hill finished tied for fourth with two day totals of 164. LCU had four golfers finish in the top six individually as the Lady Chaps cruised to the title by a ten-stroke margin.
Valencia entered the final round as the co-leader along with Oklahoma City’s Laura Jones. Valencia carded an 87 in the second day while Jones, the two-time defending SAC Champion, shot a second round total of 90 to finish tied for 10th.
Wayland Baptist shot 664, one stroke behind of second place OCU. Southern Nazarene finished fourth while Oklahoma Baptist, Northwestern Oklahoma State and Rogers State rounded out the seven team tournament field.
LCU Head Coach John Dansby was named Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Coach of the Year as the Lady Chaps clinched their fifth consecutive trip to the NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship. This is LCU’s first-ever automatic bid and this year’s championship is held May 17-20th at Lake Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn.
