Award Winning Streak
By: Chris Due
OKLAHOMA CITY (January 23, 2012) - For a third consecutive week a member of the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals was selected as the Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, as LCU forward Emily Atkins received the honor for the week of Jan. 16-22.
Atkins helped No.9 LCU extend their win streak to 12 games, their highest under head coach Steve Gomez, and they are a win away from matching their program mark from the 1996/1997 season. The sophomore from Crandall, Texas had back-to-back 25-point performances. She was 53.8% from the field on the week (14/26) and she was 18-of-20 (90%) from the free-throw line. Against Rogers State, she had 18 of her 25 points in the second half.
LCU has had an individual claim the weekly honor for three straight weeks and five of the prior six weeks. It is the sixth time overall this season a Lady Chaps member has received the award. Atkins claims the award for a second time this season to join teammate Brittany Roberts as the only two-time recipients of the award. She claimed the honor on Dec. 5 as well.
