PLAINVIEW, Texas (December 8, 2011) - Freshman Nicole Hampton hit her first seven shot attempts and finished with a career-high 21 points, as she led No.19 Lubbock Christian University to a 67-56 win over Wayland Baptist University Thursday night in Sooner Athletic Conference action at Hutcherson Center.
LCU never trailed in the game and got out to a fast start by opening the game on a 6-0 run and not allowing the Flying Queens to get their first field goals of the game until five minutes into the game. Hampton opened the game going 5-for-5 in the first half to lead all scorers with 12 points in the half. Wayland Baptist had 13 offensive rebounds in the half, but couldn't take advantage of the second chances, as LCU outscored WBU 8-6 in second chance points. LCU also took advantage of 11 turnovers, which led to LCU outscoring WBU 15-2 in points off turnovers. The Lady Chaps led 28-22 at the half.
Brittany Roberts opened the second half with a jumper for LCU and it was a sign of what was to come for the remainder of the half. The Lady Chaps never trailed by less than six points in the final ten minutes of the game and Roberts sparked LCU with 12 second half points. The Lady Chaps also received 11 points in the second half from Emily Atkins, who had five come from the free-throw line. Sixteen of the 39 second half points for LCU came from the free-throw line. In the final 10 minutes, LCU produced three field goals and 12 of their final 18 points came from the free-throw line.
Alex Williams produced a double-double in the losing cause. She had 10 rebounds to go along with 20 points for WBU. The Flying Queens ended up outrebounding LCU 49-33, with 24 offensive rebounds. The second chances ended up providing WBU a 68-47 advantage in field goals attempted.
Along with the 21 points for Hampton, LCU received 14 points each from Atkins and Roberts. LCU improved their record to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. It is the first time LCU has had a 3-0 SAC start since opening the 2008/2009 SAC season 5-0. WBU remained without a SAC win, and fell to 0-3 in SAC play. They fell to 2-7 overall. LCU hits the Christmas Break and will return to action with an exhibition game on Dec. 28th. They return to SAC play Dec. 31st at Southern Nazarene University.
