LUBBOCK, Texas (January 7, 2011) - Kelsey Canavan matched a career high with 22 points, Nicole Hampton notched her third straight game with a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and April Ehlers recorded a career-high 17 points to lead No.17 Lubbock Christian University to a 78-60 win over St. Gregory's University Saturday afternoon inside Rip Griffin Center. The win not only extended the Lady Chaps win streak to eight games but it gives them a 7-0 conference record for their best Sooner Athletic Conference start in program history.
SGU came out strong in the first half and built an 18-15 lead before the tide turned in favor of the Lady Chaps. LCU went on a 15-0 run, with Ehlers scoring five points and serving as one of four different players figuring into the run. The Lady Chaps used a 12-4 advantage in second chance scoring and it led to a 38-29 halftime lead. Canavan hit six field goals in the half and led all scorers with 12 points in the half.
Katie Lucas opened the second half with a pair of free throws for SGU to cut the LCU lead to 38-31, but it would be as close as they would get to the Lady Chaps. A 21-5 surge extended the LCU lead to 66-40 with 9:53 remaining. Canavan supplied 10 points and Ehlers registered 11 in the closing half.
LCU shot 43.5% (27/62) from the field, while SGU shot 41.4% (24/58) from the field. Emily Atkins had 10 points for LCU to join Canavan, Ehlers and Hampton in double figures in points. Leticia Silva led SGU with 14 points and she was joined in double figures by Kylie Mayes (13 points) and Jalisa Howard (10 points). LCU had a 10-2 advantage in steals in the game.
The Lady Chaps improved their overall record to 10-3 with the win. SGU fell to 11-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play, suffering their third straight loss. LCU returns to the road and plays at No.1 Oklahoma City University Thursday in a contest pitting the top two SAC teams.
