SAC Player of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY (January 9, 2011) - Lubbock Christian University center Kelsey Canavan became the fourth different  Lady Chaparral to claim Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors, as she claimed the award Monday for the week of Jan. 2-8^th.

LCU is off to their best conference start (7-0) in program history, and last week they went 3-0 with an average win margin of 30.3 points. Kelsey Canavan led the way with an average of 20 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. The 6-1 El Paso native set a career high with 22 points (off 10-of-13 shooting) at Science & Arts of Oklahoma and then matched it with 22 points against St. Gregory's on Saturday.  Against Oklahoma Baptist, she recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, coming three assists shy of a triple-double. She hit a three-pointer in the game, which is her only attempt of the season. Canavan shot 61% from the field on the week (25/41) and also combined for 11 assists, 4 blocks and 3 steals.

The honor for Canavan is her first of her career.  She joins Emily Atkins, Brittany Roberts and Nicole Hampton as LCU recipients of the award this season.  On the year, Canavan is averaging 14.3 and 6.9 rebounds a game.  She ranks 11^th in the NAIA and second in the SAC in field goal shooting (53.5%).

The No.12 Lady Chaps (10-3, 7-0) return to action Thursday at 6 p.m. with a road contest at No.1 Oklahoma City University.  The match pits the only two unbeaten teams in conference play.
