DENTON, Texas (August 13, 2010) – Texas Woman’s University basketball head coach Beth Jillson announced the hiring of former Lubbock Christian University women’s basketball assistant coach Michael Madrid as the new assistant coach for the Pioneers program. He replaces Kendra Hassell, who resigned in July to move with her husband to Wisconsin.

Madrid joins TWU after spending the past five years at LCU, including four years as an assistant coach under head coach Steve Gomez. He helped the Lady Chaps advance to the NAIA National Championships Tournament in all five seasons and was a key ingredient in assisting the Lady Chaps to a 2006-07 Sooner Athletic Conference title and a win over Texas Tech University last season with his scouting expertise.

“Coach Madrid has given an incredible investment to our university and basketball program,” said Gomez. “We are indebted to him for his great contribution to our success on and off court over the past five years. I am extremely thankful for the partnership that we have had here and the influence that he has had on our players and the entire LCU family. I am confident that he will have a great impact on the coaches and players there at TWU and will be an outstanding head coach in the years ahead.”

Prior to coaching at LCU, Madrid held several high school assistant coaching positions, including stints at Lubbock High School (2003-05), Estacado High School (2002-03) and Portales High School (1998-02). He helped the Portals High School capture the 2001 New Mexico 3A State Championship.

Madrid has also worked at numerous basketball camps in the past 12 years. He served as a camp counselor at the University of Oklahoma Men’s Basketball Camp (1998-2005), Texas Tech Men’s Basketball Camp (2000-2005) and Lubbock Christian Women’s Basketball Camp (2005-2010).

“I am extremely excited to have Michael join our staff,” said Jillson. “He comes from a great program at LCU and his knowledge, experience, and work ethic will help us have another successful season at TWU. I am thrilled to have him and his wife, Shea, join the Pioneer family.”

Madrid earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education in 1998 and Master’s of Science degree in Sports Administration in 2001 from Eastern New Mexico University. He also earned Master’s of Science degree in Education Administration from Lubbock Christian University in 2007.
