Lady Chaps Get First Win
By: Chris Due
LUBBOCK, Texas (November 7, 2011) - Brittany Roberts racked up 19 points and Lubbock Christian University went 22/24 from the free-throw line to garner their first win of the season with a 69-56 victory over University of Texas - Permian Basin Monday evening inside Rip Griffin Center.
LCU went 0-for-17 from three point range as a team in their season opening loss to Metro State College Saturday, but they would nip that in the bud early against UTPB. The Lady Chaps made their first three pointer on their second attempt of the game and it led to nine made in the game. The Lady Chaps actually attempted 26 of their 48 field goal attempts from beyond the arch. Roberts hit all five of her field goals from beyond the arch in the game.
As much as the focus was on perimeter shooting, LCU separated themselves early in the game via the free-throw line. The Lady Chaps attempted 13 free-throws in the first half compared to three by UTPB (LCU outscored UTPB 12-1 from the line in the first half) and it helped LCU take a 31-18 halftime lead.
LCU led as much as 19 points in the second half (39-20 with 17:16 remaining), but UTPB would rally late. An 8-0 run by the Falcons cut the LCU lead to 57-51 with 4:34 remaining, but the Lady Chaps erased any thoughts of a comeback with a 10-0 run.
Along with 19 points from Roberts, LCU had 13 from Emily Atkins and 10 from Kelsey Hoppel. Kelsey Canavan had seven rebounds in the opening half and led LCU with eight. UTPB was led by 14 points from Tammy Acosta.
Lubbock Christian moves to 1-1 with the victory. The game was a regular season game for LCU, but it stood as an exhibition game for UTPB. The Lady Chaps travel to Abilene, Texas Thursday and they face Abilene Christian University at 5:30 p.m.
