PLAINVIEW, Texas (October 11, 2011) - Wayland Baptist University rallied from a 15-14 deficit in a decisive fifth set and won the set 17-15 to escape with a 3-2 win (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 17-15) over Lubbock Christian University for their first home win over the Lady Chaparrals in Hutcherson Center since Nov. 6, 1997 to end a drought of 14 consecutive home losses in the all-time series.
Wayland nearly swept the Lady Chaps in the match, as they were serving 22-21 with a 2-0 match lead before LCU closed the set on a 4-1 run to force a fourth set. In the opening set, LCU let an early 7-2 lead slip away, as an 11-3 run by the Pioneers helped them storm back in the set. WBU led in the set 22-21 before closing the set on a 3-0 run to claim the set 25-21 for a 1-0 match lead. The Pioneers never trailed in the second set and rode the momentum of winning the first set to jump out to a 10-3 lead in the set. LCU came out with a 5-0 lead in the third set, but WBU responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 6-6. There were four lead changes in the set and neither team held more than a three-point lead before LCU closed the set on the 4-1 rally. The fourth set was also tightly played with the score tied on 10 occasions. LCU used a 9-2 run to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 13-8 lead. Late in the set, the score was tied 22-22 until LCU received kills from Brittany Johnson, Maddie Johnson and Jordan Goings to close the set with a 3-0 run for a 25-22 set win, forcing a final set. The final set was neck-and-neck, as neither team led by more than two points throughout the set. WBU was serving with a 14-12 lead, but LCU responded with three straight points to serve with a 15-14 lead. WBU called two consecutive timeouts and responded with a 3-0 run with a pair of kills by Tatiana Gonzalez to win the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.
Jordan Goings led LCU with a match-high 55 assists to become the fourth player in program history to surpass 3,500 assists. She finished the match three kills shy of a triple-double, recording her fifth consecutive double-double and eighth of the season, as she had 55 assists and 19 digs. LCU recorded a season high 111 digs, marking the most since they accumulated 125 against Oklahoma City University on Nov. 10, 2007.
Four members of the Pioneers had double-doubles, as Kate Trejos (20 kills, 19 digs), Tatiana Gonzalez (21 digs, 12 kills), Kimberli Harger (15 kills, 12 digs) and Natasha Giacomazzi (49 assists, 24 digs) each completed the task in the win. LCU was co-led in kills by Brittany Johnson and Caitlin Kender, who each had 16 kills. Johnson matched a career high with 7 blocks in the match. Kacey Deterding produced a career high 12 kills for the Lady Chaps.
The loss is the second consecutive loss for the Lady Chaps and their record drops to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while WBU improves to 15-7 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. The Lady Chaps are off the rest of the week and will not play until hosting University of the Southwest (N.M.) Monday inside Rip Griffin Center.
