Lady Chaps Pull Away From Lady Cavs

SHAWNEE, Okla. (February 4, 2010) – Brittany Hampton led a foursome of double-figure point producers with 20 points to lead No.22 Lubbock Christian University to a 77-58 win over St. Gregory’s University Thursday night at W.P. Wood Field House.
The contest was tightly played in the first half with six lead changes. Neither team had more than a four-point lead until LCU scored 12 of the final 17 points of the half to take a 34-25 lead. SGU’s Leticia Silva led all scorers with 11 first-half points, but LCU held her scoreless in the second half. The Lady Chaps opened the second half with a Shamika Singleton field goal for a 36-25 lead, but SGU came back with a 9-4 run moments later to cut LCU’s lead to 44-41 with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Lady Chaps avoided any upset attempt by the Lady Cavaliers with a 7-0 run for a 51-41 lead. April Ehlers recorded a career high 15 points with 13 scored in the second half to help LCU out-score SGU 22-9 over a five minute span late in the second half for a 73-54 advantage.
Hampton also contributed with the offensive flurry in the second half for LCU, as she produced 12 of her 20 points in the half. The Lady Chaps also received 12 points from Whitney Wehmeyer and ten points from Severyn Smith in the game. LCU out-rebounded SGU 32-23 with Singleton registering a game-high six rebounds. Lubbock Christian came close to matching a program single-game percentage record from the free-throw line (18-for-18), as they went 14-for-14 from the charity stripe. SGU was led in the loss by Brittania Simmons, who registered 13 of her 15 points in the second half. The game was plagued by 54 combined turnovers, with 29 committed by SGU. The Lady Cavs did shoot 50% (23/46) in the game, but they were held to just 2-of-9 shooting (22.2%) from three-point range.
LCU has now won 13 consecutive meetings against SGU. They improved to 15-6 overall with the win on the season and 10-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. They remain in third place of the SAC heading into Saturday’s contest with No.4 Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee.
