Quick Start Lifts LCU

DECATUR, Ala. (May 20, 2010) – A four-run first inning was all Lubbock Christian University needed, as Alyssa Gutierrez pitched a complete game shutout and the Lady Chaparrals opened pool play of the NAIA National Championship with a 6-0 win over Indiana University – Southeast.
LCU jumped out with the lead early, as Kayla Van Dieren followed a lead-off single by Kim Frazier with a two-run home run. Priscilla FaGaines kept the dose of offense going with a double and Jen Frazier scored a run with a single before Amanda Myers was thrown out at home. The Lady Chaps added a pair of runs in the second inning off three hits for a 6-0 LCU lead. LCU only had three hits the rest of the way.
Gutierrez improved to 37-3 with the win. She led LCU with just five hits allowed, as she struck out six in her seven innings of work. Kayla Duke was credited with the loss for IUS, as she allowed three earned runs off six hits in one innings to fall to 14-5 on the season. The Grenadiers committed four errors in the game.
LCU improved to 53-6 on the season and they are 1-0 in pool play, while the Grenadiers fall to 33-13 overall and 0-1 in pool play action. LCU resumes play on Friday at 9:30 a.m., as they face Morningside.
