LUBBOCK, Texas (August 28, 2010) – The Lubbock Christian University men’s soccer team made its debut Saturday afternoon at LCU Soccer Field with the Chaparrals benefiting off a pair of penalty kicks to defeat University of the Southwest (N.M.) 3-1 in the first game in program history.
The Mustangs kept the large LCU turnout silent early after Danny Castano hammered a rebound past goalkeeper Alistair Caldwell 12 minutes into the game. The Chaps took advantage of the very windy conditions in the second half, out-shooting the Mustangs 13-1 in the half. Quinton Jackson, a freshman from Arlington, scored the first goal in program history and tied the match at 1-1 by heading in a throw-in from Aaron Tiemann at 47:56. The Chaps took the lead with 18:26 remaining with Tony Valera scoring on a penalty kick after a foul in the box by USW. Another foul in the box by USW goalkeeper Manuel Hernandez, which included a yellow card, resulted in Tiemann taking a penalty kick. He scored on the opportunity with 5:09 remaining.
It was a physical game with 17 combined fouls (12 against USW) and five yellow cards distributed. Caldwell stopped two of three shots-on-goal for the win for LCU (1-0), while Manuel Hernandez stopped 10 of 13 shots-on-goal for USW to suffer the loss (0-1). The game was the first of the season for each squad. The Chaps return to the pitch Wednesday at 3 p.m., as they go to Abilene to face McMurry University.
