Chaps Say "GoodNight"to 'Cats

By: Chris Due

LUBBOCK, Texas (November 7, 2011) - Adam Goodnight lifted the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals to the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game with a goal in the 76th minute to lead LCU to a 1-0 victory over Rogers State University Monday afternoon at LCU Soccer Field.

Rogers State controlled the tempo most of the game.  They out-shot LCU 23-18 and had a 6-5 advantage of shots-on-goal.  LCU was limited with their opportunities.  Their only scoring chance of their two shots-on-goal in the first half was a breakaway by Billy Forbes, which was denied by a save from RSU goalkeeper Jeremy Swift.

The second half was not much different, as the RSU defense placed two and three defenders on Forbes to limit the LCU scoring chances.  They finally capitalized on a chance in the 76th minute, as defender Cole Stuart stepped in front of a Hillcats midfielder to intercept a lead pass.  Stuart passed the ball to Pernell Nembila, who fed the ball to an open Goodnight streaking down the right side.  Goodnight was alone on goal and drilled a shot past the reach of Swift for the eventual game winning goal.

Goalkeeper Hunter Ganze was key in the win for LCU, as he stopped all six shots to preserve his fourth shutout of the season and the eighth for the Chaps.  All of his saves were challenging including a pair of point-blank shots in the first half.

LCU improved to 14-3-3 on the season with the win and Rogers State University is eliminated from tournament play with an 11-8-1 overall mark.  The Chaps, a second-year program competing in their first SAC Tournament, make their first trip to the SAC Tournament Championship game, where they will face University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma Thursday at 2 p.m. in Chickasha, Okla.  The two teams were the top two seeds in the tournament and the winning team will receive an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship.
