Chaps Get Fourth... Top No.1 OCU!

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (Feb. 16, 2010) – Lubbock Christian University might not have finished in first place at the Arizona Intercollegiate golf tournament hosted by Southern Nazarene University, but they have a lot to be happy about as they return to the Hub City.  In a tournament that was filled with seven NAIA top-25 teams, unranked LCU’s men’s golf team finished in a tie for fourth place, just three strokes off the leaders and five strokes ahead of No.1 Oklahoma City University.

With a three-day total of 882, 18 strokes over par., the Chaps finished three strokes behind No. 6 Holy Names University and No. 11 Oklahoma Christian University, who tied for first place with a three-day total of 879 at the par-72 Francisco Grande Golf Course.

LCU finished higher than four of the ranked teams in the competition. The team shot a 297 in the final round, which was the third best on the day. Individually, Cosme Beamonte finished in seventh place for the tournament with a three day total of 218 (72-74-72). His final round 72 was fourth best on the day. Landon Waters (74-72-74 = 220) finished in a tie for eighth place, two strokes behind his teammate Beamonte.  Waters finished tied for sixth in par three scoring, combining to shoot +1 on all par-three holes. 

Trevor Turnbow finished in a tie for 28th place after a final round 81. Michael Milliken shot a 77 on the day and finished with a three-day total of 227 to finish in a tie for 32nd place. Jake Mahan shot his second best score of the tournament with a 74 on the final day for a three-day total of 228. He finished in a tie for 37th.  LCU led the tournament in par-four scoring, averaging a 4.15  per par-four hole.  The Chaps also finished tied for second in birdies (39) and third in pars with 167.

The Chaparrals will follow up their strong outing at the Arizona Intercollegiate by competing in the UST Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament March 14-15 in Fort Worth hosted by Texas Wesleyan.
