Chaps Finish in Fourth

AMARILLO, Texas (October 10, 2011) - Niel DuPreez shot a final round one-under-par (-1) and Leon Scheepers shot even-par for a third place finish and the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals finished in fourth place at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational hosted by West Texas A&M at Tascosa Country Club.
Scheepers was in second place after carding a 69 in the opening round, and he followed it with a pair of 72s to finish with a three-round total of 213. DuPreez opened with a 73 and followed with a 75 before leading the team with his final round 70. His final round score was the second best final round score in the field and it helped him to a sixth place finish. Josh Mahan finished in the top-25 with a share of 23rd place with a 227 (74,75,78). Also competing for the Chaps was Cameron Swarb (74-79-76, 229; tied-29th) and Facundo Garcia (81-79-72, 232; 36th). Playing individually for LCU was Nicolas Cornu and he finished in a share of 31st with a 230 (79, 78, 73).
The Chaps turned in a 290 in the opening and final round with a 301 in the middle round. The 881 total score for the Chaps was four strokes better than Wayland Baptist University and three strokes behind Cameron University. LCU and Wayland were the only NAIA programs among the 10-team field comprised mostly of NCAA Div. II squads. The Chaps finished behind three NCAA Div. III programs, including Abilene Christian, who won the tournament with a 859 (295, 275, 289). Alex Carpenter of ACU won the event with a 208 (71, 70, 67) on the par-71 6,492-yard layout.
