By: Chris Due
CHICKASHA, Okla. (January 2, 2012) - Douglas Williams posted a career high 15 rebounds as part of his double-double with 19 points and teammate Rashad Sample had 20 points, but three-point shooting woes for a second consecutive game hurt Lubbock Christian University, who fell 82-67 Monday afternoon in a Sooner Athletic Conference contest at University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma.
Saturday, LCU was unsuccessful on nine three-point attempts, but still defeated No.16 Southern Nazarene University. Against the Drovers, LCU opened the game 0-for-6 from three-point range and finally ended the drought with a three-point field goal by Sample. The Chaps would end up shooting a miserable 15.4% (4/26) from long distance in the game. While LCU was trying to dial in from long range, the Drovers were thriving from downtown. USAO went 10-for-21 from long range in the game for 47.6%, going 7-for-14 (50%) in the first half alone.
The Chaps trailed 33-26 at halftime, but then could not get anything going early in the second half. USAO pushed their lead to as much as a 21-point advantage in the second half (56-35 with 12:13 remaining). LCU scored 41 points in the second half, but only 23 points came from the field. The Chaps tallied 18 of their second half points from the free-throw line.
LCU would end up 32.3% from the field in the game (20/62), while USAO was 42.6% on the floor (26/61). USAO out-scored LCU 26-16 in points off turnovers and 27-10 in bench scoring. USAO was led by Kyle Hunt, a Middle Tennessee State transfer, who had 15 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.
The Chaps two-game SAC win streak came to an end with the loss and the Chaps fall to 2-3 in the SAC and 6-6 overall. USAO improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in SAC play. LCU, who has not played at home since Nov. 26, returns home Thursday and they will face Oklahoma Baptist University. The game, which will take place inside Rip Griffin Center after the Lady Chaparrals game, was originally scheduled for an estimated 7:30 tip, but the new estimated start time is at 8 p.m. by request of Oklahoma Baptist.
