Sample Breaks Assist Record In Win

LUBBOCK, Texas (November 12, 2011) - Rashad Sample set the Lubbock Christian University single-game school record for assists with 16 and also added 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds to carry the Chaparrals to a 90-61 victory over Texas College Saturday inside Rip Griffin Center.
Sample notched his second double-double of the season and his fifth of his LCU career. He snapped the prior mark of 12 assists, which he had completed three times, including the Chaparrals prior game. He was two rebounds shy of a triple-double.
Texas College was solid early in the game. The Steers took advantage of an LCU scoring draught of 4:26 in the opening half with a 10-0 run and took a 30-18 lead with 7:13 left in the first half. LCU answered back with a 10-1 run and Tyler Kennedy hit a pair of his five three-pointers before the half to help the Chaps close the final 7:13 with a 22-5 scoring advantage to take a 40-35 lead at the break. The momentum spilled into the second half for the Chaps, as they outscored Texas College 50-26 in the second half. LCU had a 27-8 scoring advantage over the final 10:19 of the game.
Five Chaps scored in double-figures, led by the 19 Sample posted. Joining him was Jaron Vierra (17 points), Kennedy (15 points), Jevvon Hunter (12 points), Anthony Brancato (11 points). The Chaps held the Steers to a 36.8% (21/75) field goal shooting percentage in the game, while they were 62.5% (35/56) from the field. LCU was 11-of-18 (61.1%) from beyond the arch and Kennedy knocked down five of the trays for the Chaps. Hunter had a breakout performance for LCU. He registered a career-high 12 points off 4-of-4 shooting and was 2-of-2 from beyond the arch and also matched a game-high with three steals. Jamal Robertson led the Steers in the losing cause with 18 points.
LCU improved their record to 2-1, while Texas College fell to 3-2. The Chaps head to San Antonio Friday to participate in a classic hosted by Our Lady of the Lake University, who they will face at 8 p.m. Friday.
