Trio Earn All-SAC Honors

By: Ray Fink / Chris Due

OKLAHOMA CITY (March 1, 2010) - Oklahoma Baptist and Oklahoma City finished tied for the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title with no SAC losses to anyone but each other. The All-Sooner Athletic Conference team reflects that with the teams dominating the awards.  Lubbock Christian University was represented with Brittany Hampton claiming Second Team honors and April Ehlers and Shamika Singleton earning a spot on the Honorable Mention list.  Five players earned Academic All-Conference for LCU, and they are Rachel Gray, Brandi Raindl, Severyn Smith, Whitney Wehmeyer and Rene Wilson.

OBU senior guard Taujhnae Travis is the SAC Player of the Year after finishing second in the SAC in scoring at 16.6 points per game and fourth in steals at 2.1. Travis was Player of the Year last season and is from Humble, Texas.  Her teammate, Ashley Harrell, a senior guard from Camden, Ark., was named Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged 2.3 steals and 1.6 blocked shots per game.

Oklahoma City’s Rob Edmisson is the SAC Coach of the Year, having guided the Stars to a league record of 20-2, partially on the strength of two new players recognized as the best new talent in the conference.  Lauren Gober was named Freshman of the Year, while Donica Cosby earned Newcomer of the Year. Gober, a 6-1 forward from Newcastle, Okla., averaged 10.4 points per game. At 14.2 points per game, Cosby, a junior guard who transferred from Arkansas-Fort Smith, was third in the SAC in scoring.

Southern Nazarene’s Lauren Langston won the Sportsmanship Award.  Travis and Cosby were also First-Team All-SAC selections and were joined on there by Lana Keith of Southern Nazarene, Holly Hardin of Oklahoma City and Jenny Hardin of Rogers State.  Keith was the leading scorer in the SAC at 18.1 points per game. Holly Hardin averaged 12.1 and Jenny Hardin averaged 13.6.

The Second Team included Brittany Hampton of Lubbock Christian, Ashley Taylor of John Brown, Starr Fairbanks of Oklahoma City, Harrell, Logan Martin of Southern Nazarene and Charitie Lewis of USAO.

Third-Team selections included Gabriell Mattox of Oklahoma Baptist, Lisa Chenoweth of Oklahoma Christian, Kailan DeCamp of Oklahoma Christian, Karina Trindade of Mid-America Christian, Shamon Doss of Wayland Baptist and Amy Pryor of OBU.

It is the first time Lady Chaps members Hampton, Ehlers and Singleton have ever received SAC post-season recognition.  Hampton leads the Lady Chaps with an average of 11.3 points a game.  Singleton leads the team with an average of 4.4 rebounds a game and is averaging 9.9 points a game.  Ehlers is hitting 86.4% from the free-throw line and is averaging 7.4 points a game.

Five LCU student-athletes earning Academic All-Conference on the Lady Chaps basketball team is the most they have had five on the list in during the 2004/2005 season.  It is also the first time each of them has received the award.
