By: Chris Due
NORFOLK, Va. (September 1, 2010) – The Baltimore Orioles have promoted former Lubbock Christian University second baseman Buck Britton to the Norfolk Tides, which serve as their triple-A affiliate in the International League.
The Tides have six games remaining in their season and they are at home Wednesday night against the Gwinnet Braves. Britton, who is a native of Weatherford, Texas, is in his third season of professional baseball since leaving the Chaparrals following his senior season in 2008. He had spent the entire season with the Frederick Keys of the class-A advanced Carolina League. In 99 games, Britton is batting .260 with five home runs and 48 runs-batted-in. He joins a Norfolk roster, which includes his brother Zach, unless Baltimore decides to promote Zach to Baltimore and include him in their possible six-man rotation.
Also currently enjoying play in affiliated baseball are former Chaps Jarred Bogany, Rene Garcia, Gary Poynter and Joe Staley. Bogany, also off the 2008 LCU squad, is in the Florida State League (class-A advanced) with the Palm Beach Cardinals. He is batting .254 with five homers and 37 runs-batted-in in 75 games. Garcia, the winning pitcher in the Chaps 2009 NAIA title winning game, is in Great Falls, Montana with the Chicago White Sox’s Pioneer League (rookie league) affiliate. He is 2-0 with a 3.90 ERA in 13 appearances. Garcia has posted 21 strikeouts in 30 innings and has a save to his credit. Gary Poynter, another member from the 2008 Chaps, has appeared in both the Arizona League (rookie league) and in the California League (class-A advanced) with the San Diego Padres affiliates. Currently with the Lake Elsinore Storm, Poynter is 2-0 with a 2.67 ERA in 30 innings pitched (18 appearances). The Dallas native has not allowed an earned run in his last 12 innings pitched (last seven appearances). Staley, a Decatur, Texas native who was drafted in this past season’s draft by the San Francisco Giants, made his pro debut in the Arizona League (Rookie League) this season. He batted .250 with five home runs and 25 RBI in 33 games. In his last ten games, Staley batted .361 with 13 hits and 12 RBI.
