LUBBOCK, Texas (March 2, 2010) – The No.1 Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals produced a 5-2 and 8-1 victory as part of a doubleheader sweep over University of the Southwest Tuesday afternoon at Hays Field.
In the opener, Hunter Scott had trouble allowing two hits within the first three batters faced, but then settled down to retire 13 straight batters to improve to 3-1 on the season. The first pitch of the game was sent down the left field line for a double by Danny Navarro. Oscar Roman then singled two batters later to score Navarro and give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Scott then retired 13 straight, with six by strikeouts and left the game after allowing just one run in five innings of work (allowed just two hits).
While Scott was shutting down the Mustangs, the Chaps got their offense going. Back-to-back doubles by Richard Bohlken and David Cruz to lead off the bottom of the third inning led to a two-run inning, giving LCU a 2-1 lead. A two-out rally by the Chaps helped add to the lead, as Dan Neumann hit a solo homer with two outs for his first of the season and then consecutive singles by Austin Stewart, Bohlken and Cruz led to LCU leading 4-1. Doug Kroll hit a two-out double in the fifth inning to score Ross Blondin and it provided LCU a 5-2 lead. The lead wasn’t safe though. USW produced a run off of Chaps pitcher Tanner Vickers in the sixth inning and then had the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning. With LCU leading 5-2 and two runners on base, former Chap Vince Bejar stepped into the batters box to face former Chap teammate and Coronado High School teammate Vickers. Bejar ended up flying out to right field and Vickers struck out Joshua Hargrove to register his first save of the season.
The Chaps, leading the NAIA in doubles, produced four in the game. Cruz, Bohlken and Neumann each had two hits in the game and Cruz led all players with a pair of runs-batted-in. Matt Peoples pitched all six innings for USW and allowed five runs on 10 hits to drop to 2-2 on the year.
In the second game, USW had plenty off opportunities to build a lead, but couldn’t. In the first inning, USW led the game off with a pair of singles, but Roman hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat. In the top of the second inning, Martin Adams, Bejar and Alfredo Guevarra each singled to load the bases without an out. Chaps starting pitcher Tristan Gaines then regrouped and struck out the next three batters to leave the bases loaded. LCU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly from Bohlken to score Reid Chenworth. In the fourth inning, LCU scored four runs all with two-outs to build the lead to 5-0. Cruz had a single to score a run and Marc Gomez cleared the bases with a bases-loaded double for a trio of runs-batted-in. Roman was up with the bases loaded and no outs for USW in the fifth inning, but Shane Ingram forced him into hitting into another double play and the Chaps got out of the jam allowing just one run. LCU added to their lead in the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs from Kroll and JJ Muse for an 8-1 lead. The game fittingly ended with Roman hitting into his third double play of the game while the bases were loaded.
Gaines received the win for LCU with no runs allowed on five hits over three innings. He also had five strikeouts en route to his first win of the season (1-2). Reyes Melendez dropped to 0-3 after allowing seven runs off of nine hits in four innings of work. Chenworth was 2-for-2 for LCU, extending his hit streak to eight games. Cruz and Stewart also had multi-hit games. Gomez was 1-for-3 with three runs-batted-in. USW was led by a 3-for-4 performance by Danny Navarro.
The pair of wins places LCU’s record at 13-6, while USW is 4-8. The Chaps now travel to Alva, Okla., where they will face Northwestern Oklahoma State University beginning with a Friday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
