By: Chris Due
LUBBOCK, Texas (June 9, 2011) – A pair of baseball players from the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals received hardware for their academic efforts, as Richard Bohlken and Brent Leslie claimed Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. In addition, Bohlken also claimed 2011 Capital One Academic First Team All-District honors in the College Division.
Bohlken, a junior from Albuquerque, claimed the two academic honors with a 3.83 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) majoring in Criminal Justice. To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Leslie is a native of Lubbock, Texas and holds a 3.60 GPA in Business Administration. In order to be eligible for the NAIA honor, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
This marks the first time LCU has had multiple recipients for the Daktronics-NAIA honor since John Dover and Ryan Owen received the honor in 2006. Bohlken becomes the first player to receive All-District honors in academics since Zach Barnard received the honor in 2004.
