CEDAR HILL, Texas (February 6, 2010) – No.1 Lubbock Christian University opened their 2010 season Saturday afternoon splitting a doubleheader at No.25 Northwood University winning the opener 4-1 and losing the second game 7-4 at Knights Field.
In the opener, Brett Kazmierski hit a two-run double to highlight a four-run second inning and it was all LCU needed to win the opener 4-1. It was one of just five hits for the Chaps, who handed Trent Montgomery the loss. Montgomery pitched all seven innings for the Knights and had four strikeouts while allowing four runs on five hits. Tyler Rogers received the start for the Chaps and claimed the victory as he allowed just one run on five hits. He also claimed five strikeouts. Northwoods lone run was unearned as it was tallied on a throwing error by Chaps first baseman Marc Gomez on a rundown during a pickoff. Tristan Gaines claimed the save for LCU.
LCU opened the second game with a two-run home run by Doug Kroll for the Chaps first dinger of the season. Northwood responded in the bottom half of the first inning by capitalizing on another Gomez error. Anthony Washington reached on a missed catch and Justin Keithley doubled him home to start a three-run inning for a 3-2 Knights lead. The Knights produced a pair of singles in the third inning to extend the lead to 4-2 before the Chaps tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-RBI single to centerfield. LCU had a chance to take the lead later in the inning with the bases loaded, but Kane Kimrey was able to force Gomez into grounding out to end the threat. The Knights used a trio of doubles in the bottom half of the inning to score three runs to take the 7-4 lead. Kimrey was able to hold the Chaps to only one hit the rest of the way for the win on the mound. Kimrey pitched all seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, while striking out four batters. The Chaps gave Hunter Scott the start and he allowed five earned runs off nine hits in five innings pitched. Richard Bohlken led LCU in the loss with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Kroll and Staley each a two runs-batted-in. Adam Humes led the Knights in the game going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Chaparrals take their 1-1 record to Fort Worth's historic LaGrave Field Sunday, as they will face Texas Wesleyan University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM. Both of the games will air on www.lcuchaps.com with Charlie Hodges on the call. Live scoring is also available online.
