OKLAHOMA CITY (February 4, 2012) - Lubbock Christian University face an important contest in attempt to move up the Sooner Athletic Conference standing Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., as they face Oklahoma Christian University inside The Eagle's Nest. LCU enters the game 11-10 overall and 7-7 in the SAC (seventh place), while OC is 14-8 overall and is 8-7 in conference (tied for fifth). WATCH ONLINE / ONLINE AUDIO LINK / LIVE SCORING / GAME NOTES / RADIO: KJAK 92.7 FM

ABOUT OC
The Eagles enter the week winners of their last two games and four of their prior five games. OC, 14-7 overall and 8-6 in the SAC, is 9-3 at home and they open up the week hosting Wayland Baptist Thursday. Their contest against LCU is the third game of a four game home stand. Following the home stand, the Eagles will play just one of their final five games at home.

THE SERIES AGAINST OC
The all-time series dates back to 1971 and OC leads the rivalry 35-17. The Eagles swept the Chaps in the season series last season.

THE LAST MEETING AGAINST OC
Feb. 17, 2011 - Oklahoma City - LCU 69 - OC 82
If one of the Chaparrals 28 missed three-point field goal attempts would have went in, it could have been a different outcome in their Sooner Athletic Conference tilt at Oklahoma Christian University. LCU had their five-game win streak come to an end despite a double-double from Kenny Hewitt (21 points, 10 rebounds), as Oklahoma Christian held off the Chaparrals 62-59.

LCU could not get into an offensive rhythm early in the game, as they shot just 22.2% (8/36) from the field in the first half. They made their first two three-point attempts, but finished the half 2-of-18 from long range (11.1%). Oklahoma Christian led 30-22 at the half, but they faced some shooting woes as well in the first half, going 2-of-11 (18.2%) from three-point range.

The Chaps would end up missing their first four three-point attempts in the second half, marking 20 consecutive three-point misses until they finally ended the dry spell from beyond the arc. OC led throughout the second half but not without dodging several LCU rallies. They had a 36-26 lead slip away, as LCU cut the deficit to 39-38 with a 12-3 run. The Chaps tied the game at 49-49, but the Eagles answered back with a 10-0 run to place the score at 59-49 with five minutes remaining.

LCU attempted a late rally, trailing 62-54, by not allowing a point over the game's final three minutes. Al Duvall made a three-pointer with 35 seconds remaining to cut the Chaps deficit to 62-59. Kendre Talley was fouled and missed both free-throws with 24 seconds to go, providing life for the Chaps. LCU put the ball into the hands of Matt Read, who was unable to hit the equalizer from the right corner with two seconds remaining.

Will Reinke led OC with 18 points and 12 doubles. Eric Randall also added 18 for the Eagles, recording all his offensive damage in the second half.

FUTURE FORECAST
LCU returns home next week to host Mid-America Christian on Thursday and Oklahoma City on Saturday.

ALVA, Okla. (February 2, 2012) - It was an ugly ending for Lubbock Christian University, in an...

ALVA, Okla. (February 2, 2012) - It was an ugly ending for Lubbock Christian University, in an important Sooner Athletic Conference contest Thursday night at Percefull Fieldhouse, but they were able to hold onto a 70-59 lead with 1:32 remaining and get out with a 76-73 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State University. It marks the sixth consecutive game the Chaps have played in decided by five or fewer points.

LCU entered the game leading the NAIA in free-throw shooting and were coming off their best shooting performance of the season (19/20 for 95% Saturday against Southern Nazarene), but they would end up with their season low from the line. The Chaps went the final 1:56 without a field goal and were put to the line to seal the win with an 11-point lead. The Chaps, who went 6-of-14 from the line in the final half, went 6-of-7 from the line in the final 1:56. NWOSU had 14 points in the final 1:31 and had a chance to tie the game with under 20 seconds remaining, but they couldn't make the free-throw on an and-one play. As for LCU, they went a miserable 7-of-18 (38.9%) from the line.

The Chaps were also without Rashad Sample for the final 36 seconds after he fouled with 17 points and eight rebounds. LCU was led by Douglas Williams, who was 4-of-7 from beyond the arch and led all scorers with 21 points. The Chaps senior had his career best as a sophomore in Alva with 28 points two seasons ago. LCU nailed 11 three-pointers with Tyler Kennedy (3) and Williams combining for seven of them. Jeff Ayisire tallied 10 points for LCU and Ricky Roberts produced a career best 10 rebounds. NWOSU received 16 points each from Daryl Glover and Jonathan Freemyer in the loss.

The win for LCU places them at 7-7 in the SAC and 11-10 overall, while NWOSU falls to 10-12 overal and 7-8 in conference. It was a valuable win for LCU, as they are just the second SAC team to win in Alva this season. Oklahoma Baptist and non-conference for Our Lady of the Lake are a pair of top-five teams in the NAIA and neither were able to get a win at NWOSU this season. The Chaps can cap an important week with a win Saturday, as they face Oklahoma Christian University at 3 p.m.

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 28, 2012) - No.14 Southern Nazarene University closed their contest against Lubbock Christian University with a 13-5 run filled with nine free-throws to dodge an upset and sneak out of the Rip Griffin Center with a 68-64 win over the Chaparrals Saturday afternoon in a Sooner Athletic Conference contest.

For the Chaps, the loss is another result of what could have been. LCU, falling to 10-10 overall, has now suffered their eighth loss decided by single digits and their seventh decided by six or less points. It is also their sixth consecutive game decided by five or less points. The Chaps also fall to 3-4 in contests against ranked opponents, with the four losses containing an average deficit of 5.3 points.

The game featured nine lead changes and the score tied on 10 occasions. Neither team led by more than six points in the game. The Crimson Storm out-shot LCU in the game 52% (26/50) to 40% (20/50). The Chaps trailed 33-30 at halftime despite being out-shot 50% (14/28) to 39.3% (11/28) in the half. Both teams put on a clinic from the charity stripe. LCU was 19-of-20 (95%) from the line in the game and SNU was 12-for-12 until missing their final free-throw attempt to finish 12-of-13 (92.3%).

LCU received a solid performance from Douglas Williams in the loss. Williams led all players with a game-high 20 points and game-high eight rebounds. Jon West led SNU with 14 points. He was 5-of-8 from the field, 2-for-2 from long-range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

SNU improved to 17-5 overall and 11-3 in the SAC. LCU moved to 6-7 in the SAC. The meeting marked their final meeting in a SAC conference game, as SNU is in transition to join the NCAA Div. II ranks next season and will not be a part of the SAC.

Chaps Hold Off Drovers

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 26, 2012) - A 20-point performance from Lubbock Christian University...

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 26, 2012) - A 20-point performance from Lubbock Christian University point guard Rashad Sample and a 21-point second half lead was good enough to hold off a double-double from Kyle Hunt (23 points and 14 rebounds) and a comeback attempt from University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, as LCU survived for a 65-61 Sooner Athletic Conference victory Thursday night inside Rip Griffin Center.

The Chaps jumped out to a quick start, opening the game on a 15-4 run. The Chaps dominated inside the paint in the opening 20 minutes, out-scoring the Drovers 20-8 in the paint. They also took advantage of a 9-4 upper hand in forced turnovers to out-score USAO 15-4 in points off turnovers in the half. The Chaps shot 48.1% (13/27) and held USAO to 29.6% (8/27) in the opening half for a 41-26 halftime lead. Sample had 14 of his 20 points in the opening half and Jeff Ayisire added 11 points. The two combined to shoot 9-of-13 from the field in the half.

Tyler Kennedy nailed a three-pointer with 13:53 remaining in the second half to give LCU a 51-30 lead, but it turned to be the turning point of the game, as USAO responded with a 7-0 run to spark a span of the Drovers scoring the next 27 of 36 points. The 27-9 scoring surge by USAO cut the LCU lead to 60-57 with 4:48 remaining. Hunt poured in 14 points in the second half to drive the USAO comeback. The Drovers cut the deficit to three points on four occasions, but the Chaps answered each time. With 52 seconds remaining, LCU was able to extend the lead to 64-59 with an alley-oop from Sample to Ayisire, and with six seconds remaining, Sample knocked down a free-throw to keep the contest a two-possession game and seal the win.

USAO hit six three-pointers, but shot just 23.1% (6/26) from beyond the arch. Norris Rumph and Zacharias Lewis combined to make one three-pointer on 13 attempts. Hunt led all scorers with 23 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds for his tenth double-double of the season. He was 7-of-12 from the field, while the rest of his teammates shot 30% (15/50). The Chaps were fortunate to receive solid inside play, shooting 54.1% (20/37) inside the arch, as LCU was just 3-of-16 (18.8%) from three-point range. Along with the production from Sample, LCU received 16 points from Anthony Brancato and 13 points from Ayisire.

It is the fifth consecutive contest decided by five or less points for LCU (Chaps are 3-2 in the span). They improve to 10-9 overall and move into seventh place of the SAC with a 6-6 conference mark. USAO falls to 12-7 overall and 8-5 in the SAC. LCU closes out a four-game home stand Saturday hosting Southern Nazarene at 3 p.m. inside Rip Griffin Center.

Down to the Wire AGAIN

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 21, 2012) - Make it four consecutive games in which the Lubbock...

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 21, 2012) - Make it four consecutive games in which the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals have had a game decided at the final horn or in overtime, as Douglas Williams was unable to hit a three-point shot with 0.2 seconds remaining in regulation and John Brown University, who led by 15 points in the second half, survived for an 83-80 win over the Chaps Saturday afternoon in Sooner Athletic Conference action at Rip Griffin Center.

If the shot by Williams, who drained a shot at the horn on Jan. 12 at Oklahoma City for an LCU win, would have went in, it would have capped a tremendous comeback march for the Chaps. A layup by Abel Galliguez with 3:34 remaining had LCU trailing 73-63. Trailing 75-69 with 3:01 to go, LCU began their march back with Jeff Ayisire being fouled on a bucket made to setup a three-point play. Trailing 83-77 with 16 seconds left, Williams made a three-pointer to place the score at 83-80. The Golden Eagles committed a turnover on an inbounds play and LCU had the possession with 11 seconds remaining. Tyler Kennedy shot a three-pointer from the left side with less than three seconds remaining, but the ball went in-and-out and the rebound was deflected out of bounds off JBU with 0.2 remaining. By rule, a catch-and-release shot cannot be made with 0.2 seconds remaining, but Williams did get the shot off before the light came on.

The opening half was full of runs. Following an opening bucket by Adrian Miller for a 2-0 JBU lead, the Chaps went on an 11-0 run with three three-pointers nailed. The Golden Eagles would have theirs come midway through the half, as they held LCU without a field goal for a span of 7:23 and went on a 19-0 run filled with four three-point field goals. Miller tallied 12 points in the first half to give JBU a 38-32 lead. Rashad Sample led LCU with 13 points in the half. The two teams combined for 13 three-pointers in the half from nine different players playing a factor into the stat. Sample had three of the six LCU three-pointers made in the opening half.

The Chaps carried a run from late in the first half into the second half and it developed into a 9-0 run and it placed their deficit at 38-37 two minutes into the second half. Three-pointers from Thomas Galliguez, Coleson Rakestraw and EJ McWoods resulted in a 9-0 run and LCU was back to a double figure deficit, trailing 51-41 with 13:55 left. LCU would trail as much as 67-52 (with 6:09 remaining) before they started their rally. The Chaps had a 24-10 scoring advantage in the paint in the second half, but JBU was 14/25 (56%) from the field in the half (5-of-9, 55.6% from three-point range).

Sample led all scorers in the game with 22 points and 10 assists for his fifth double-double and his second in as many games. He was 8-of-16 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range. Williams finished with 16 points and Ayisire scored all 13 of his points in the second half. JBU was led by 16-point performances from Miller and Galliguez. They also received 14 points from Rakestraw and 10 points each from Andy Garcia and McWoods. JBU shot 50% (28/56) from the field and from three-point range (12/24). The teams combined for 22 three-pointers. LCU had 10 on 21 attempts (47.6%).

The loss by LCU marks the third straight game they have lost when playing a game following a win over a ranked team, as LCU was coming in following an overtime win over No.5 Rogers State Thursday. The Chaps are 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the SAC. Of their nine losses, the Chaps have now had seven single-digit losses and six decided by six or less points. JBU improved to 15-5 overall and 7-5 in the SAC. The Chaps remain home Thursday and will host University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. inside Rip Griffin Center.

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 19, 2012) - Make it seven consecutive games in which a contest between...

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 19, 2012) - Make it seven consecutive games in which a contest between Lubbock Christian University and Rogers State University was decided by single digits, and this one needed overtime to decide the outcome. Rashad Sample produced a double-double with 19 points and 12 assists and LCU upset No.5 Rogers State 92-87 in Sooner Athletic Conference action inside Rip Griffin Center Thursday night.

If LCU would have lost, it would have been another lead against the Hillcats they let slip away. In their prior meeting on Dec. 3, LCU let a 62-51 lead slip away in the second half. This time, LCU opened the game 6-of-8 from beyond the arc (three from Tyler Kennedy) and the Chaps had a 32-13 lead with 10:42 remaining in the first half. The Hillcats did respond with a 12-2 run late in the half and eventually cut the LCU lead to 44-37 heading into halftime. The Chaps capitalized on 11 Hillcat turnovers in the half, leading to a 12-4 LCU advantage in points off turnovers. The Chaps were 7-of-12 (58.3%) from three-point range in the half. Anthony Brancato had 13 points and nine rebounds in the first half and Kennedy added 11 for the Chaps. Donald Williams carried RSU in the half with three three-pointers for a 13-point half.

LCU built the lead back to double figures in the second half, pushing the lead to 54-41 with 17:14 remaining, but it was short lived. RSU responded with a 14-2 run over a four minute span to cut the Chaps lead to 56-55. Kendrell Thompson nailed a three-pointer with 11 minutes remaining to give RSU a 59-58 lead and it was the first of an eventual 12 lead changes. Trailing by their largest deficit at 64-60 as eight minutes remained, Kennedy hit consecutive three-point buckets to ignite an 8-0 run placing LCU up 68-64 with six minutes remaining. The two teams traded one-point leads three times in the final 1:04 and a jumper by Williams placed the Hillcats up 81-80 with 13 seconds remaining. A deflected ball out of bounds against the Hillcats in the Chaps offensive end led to an inbounds with five seconds remaining. Sample was tripped up and fouled dribbling out from the corner by Maurice Rutherford and it resulted in a one-and-one free-throw situation for Sample with three seconds remaining. He made the first, but missed the second resulting in an 81-81 tie at the end of regulation.

The momentum was in the hands of RSU, who shot 64% (16/25) from the field in the second half (4-of-7 from three-point range), but layups in overtime by Sample and Jeff Ayisire of LCU provided the Chaps an 88-84 lead in overtime with 1:35 left. Sample closed out the game and put it out of reach with 12 seconds remaining with a pair of free throws for the 92-87 lead. The Chaps were 4-of-6 (66.7%) from the field in overtime.

The Chaps dominated the game in the paint with a 40-22 scoring advantage in the paint. They won despite being out-shot by RSU. The Hillcats were 56.9% (29/51) in the game from the field and 9/17 (52.9%) from three-point range in the loss. LCU was 49.2% (31/63) from the field and 9/19 (47.4%) from long range. They were solid from the line at 87.5% (21/24). LCU had 12 more shot attempts due in part to 13 offensive rebounds and a 32-28 rebound advantage.

Nine players combined for double figures in points, with Sample standing with the only double-double in the game. RSU received a game-high 20 points from Donald Williams, along with 18 points from Thompson, 14 points from Justynn Hammond and 13 points from Larry Cox. The Chaps had five players with at least 13 points, as Douglas Williams and Tyler Kennedy each had 17 points, Brancato finished with 16 points and Ayisire had 13 points to join Sample. Donald Williams had four three-pointers for RSU (4-of-6) and LCU received five from Kennedy (5-of-9).

The game was the first overtime game of the season for the two teams and the first for both teams since Rogers State defeated LCU 104-103 in triple overtime of a SAC Tournament contest last season. The Chaps, 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, are now 3-3 against ranked opponents and 2-2 against teams ranked in the top-10. RSU falls to 15-3 overall and 8-3 in the SAC. LCU, who defeated RSU for just the second time out of 12 all-time meetings, remains home Saturday and they will host John Brown University at 3 p.m. inside Rip Griffin Center.

Sample's 30 Not Enough

OKLAHOMA CITY (January 14, 2012) - For a second consecutive game, Lubbock Christian University...

OKLAHOMA CITY (January 12, 2012) - Douglas Williams hit a three-point field goal from the right-corner as time expired and the bucket lifted Lubbock Christian University to a 62-59 road victory over Oklahoma City University Thursday night in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The win was the first for the Chaps at Oklahoma City since Feb. 19, 2004.

Charlton Jones had a chance to put OCU up with the score tied 59-59 and 26 seconds remaining, but he missed a free-throw attempt and Jaron Vierra grabbed the rebound for LCU and called a timeout with 20 seconds remaining. The Chaps worked the clock down to better position for the final shot, but the Chaps plan initially failed as OCU used a swarming defense that disallowed Rashad Sample from touching the ball. Javvon Hunter, pressured to do something with four seconds remaining, began to penetrate and while trying to split through defenders he was able to slip a pass to Williams in the right corner. Williams flung up a fade away and drained the shot at the horn for the win.

The thrilling ending added some offensive excitement to a game that did not include much offensive flow. The game featured 10 lead changes and neither team had a lead more than nine points. The first half saw OCU out-rebound LCU 24-11 leading to a 12-2 advantage in second chance scoring. Orland Jackman nearly completed a double-double in the first half for OCU with 11 rebounds and eight points in the half. LCU was fortunate to head into the half trailing 34-30, as Sample put the Chaps on his back and scored 17 points in the half going 7-of-9 from the field.

Williams was able to get the Chaps going in the second half with a pair of early field goals as part of a 9-2 run to give LCU a 41-38 lead with 16:20 remaining. That would turn out to be the largest lead in the game for LCU. The second half would feature a few scoring droughts, including a four minute span in which the score was 43-42 with LCU leading.

LCU was fortunate to get the win as they were out-rebounded 45-25 in the game. The Chaps offset that with a 21-11 advantage in turnovers. The turnovers led to a 22-8 advantage in points off turnovers for LCU. The Chaps out-scored OCU 36-30 in the paint and 12-2 in second chance scoring. Sample finished with a career-high 23 points in the game. Williams finished with 13 points and was joined in double figures by Vierra (10 points) and Jeff Ayisire (11 points). Shane Rogers finished with 16 points in the losing cause for OCU. Jackman finished with the double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Tim Morton also completed a double-double with 10 rebounds and 10 points in the losing effort.

The win places LCU with an 8-7 overall mark and 4-4 in the SAC. OCU falls to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in SAC play. It capped off a solid day for LCU, as the game followed the Lady Chaps 88-66 win over No.1 Oklahoma City to mark the first time LCU has ever swept a conference series at Oklahoma City. LCU remains on the road Saturday and they will travel to Mid-America Christian to face the Evangels at 3 p.m.
