ODER AND OUT... FRIENDS DEFEATS HOUSTON-VICTORIA 9-3 TO OPEN TOURNAMENT
LUBBOCK, Texas (May 13, 2013) – Janelle Oder hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to help 2-seed and No.23 Friends University (Kan.) defeat 3-seed No.24 University of Houston-Victoria (Texas) 9-3 in the opening game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round tournament in the Lubbock Christian Bracket Monday afternoon at PlainsCapital Park.
Friends (43-6) advances in the bracket on the heels of scoring eight unanswered runs in the game. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning after UHV's Alex Holland hit a two-run home run in the top half of the inning, Friends responded with a trio of runs to regain the lead. All three runs were off the bat of Courtney Kifer, who hit a three-run bases loaded double for a 4-3 lead. The Falcons took advantage of another bases loaded situation in the fifth inning with Janelle Oder hitting a grand slam for an 8-3 lead. They added an insurance run in the sixth inning with Kadijah Bland singling in a run.
Oder finished the game 2-for-2 with the four runs-batted-in off her second home run of the season. Christina Downs, Bland and Oder each co-led Friends with two hits. Holland and Krissa Powell led UHV with two hits each.
Kelsey Garner pitched a complete game for Friends and allowed three runs off five hits in the seven-inning performance to improve to 25-0. The loss was suffered by Dawn Villegas, who fell to 12-7 and allowed eight runs off five hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Falcons advance to Tuesday's 11 a.m. game in the winner's bracket. UHV (29-21) falls into an elimination game at 2 p.m.
