Game 4 Recap


LUBBOCK, Texas (May 14, 2013) – University of Houston – Victoria (Texas) eliminated Northwood University (Texas) from the Lubbock Bracket of the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round  Tuesday with a 6-4 win at PlainsCapital Park.

UHV struck first, garnering a run in the top of the first inning by an infield single from Casey Sax. The score would hold until the bottom of the third inning. Northwood led off the at-bat with a double from Taylor Jones and would later receive a two-run double from Kaylan Pruitt and Northwood led 3-1. UHV cut into the lead in the fourth inning with a fielder's choice scoring Sax, and then took the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Ashley Shannon hit a solo home run to lead off the inning and Marley Moehrig hit a two-run double for a 5-3 UHV lead. Gabrielle Esparza cut the deficit to 5-4 for the Knights with a double in the bottom of the fifth inning. UHV added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to right-centerfield to lead 6-4.

Jaguars relief pitcher Dawn Villegas was able to keep Northwood off the scoreboard over the final two innings. In five innings of relief, she allowed one run on five hits and improved to 13-7 on the season. Megan Spence went all seven innings for the Knights and allowed four runs off nine hits and fell to 13-4. Northwood was led by Pruitt, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs-batted-in. Sax, Winegeart and Holland each had a pair of hits for UHV, with Winegeart leading the team with three runs driven in.

Northwood ends their season with a 29-19 record with the loss. UHV improves to 30-21 overall and they advance to face Friends University (Kan.) in an elimination game Tuesday.
