All-Time Series: LCU leads 52-17
The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals close out a three-game series with a rubber match Monday at New Mexico Highlands University. It is the 70th all-time meeting against the Chaps and Cowboys. LCU seeks two win the rubber match for a second straight series to open the season. They won the opener 18-8, but fell 3-2 in the second game of the doubleheader Sunday.
OLD MAN WINTER
The series against NMHU marks the second consecutive week of play hampered by weather. Last weekend, LCU was able to get all their games in, but they did by playing their first tripleheader since Feb. 18, 1989 at Sul Ross. This week's schedule was originally set for LCU to play a Friday and Saturday set with NMHU, but favorable conditions for Sunday and Monday led to the change.
This series marks the season opener for the Cowboys. They return only two of six All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selections from last season's 29-24 squad. Head coach Steve Jones is in his 17th season and has a team that is preseason picked third in the RMAC. Tyler Hayes is one of the two all-conference selections returning. He led the Cowboys last season with a .410 batting average.
ALL-TIME SERIES WITH NMHU
Sunday's series opener at NMHU was the first games against the Cowboys since a home doubleheader split on Mar. 1, 2002 at Hays Field. The Chaps lead the all-time series 52-17 and have a 20-10 advantage away from home in the series. The series dates back to 1972.
