LUBBOCK, Texas (November 12, 2013) – Sixth-ranked West Texas A&M won its 20th straight match at the expense of Lubbock Christian in a three-set contest Tuesday night at the Rip Griffin Center. Tyler Webster recorded a match-high 12 kills and Kacey Deterding supplied 11 in the loss for LCU.
The Lady Chaps (15-12, 11-5 Heartland) had a difficult time keeping pace with the Lady Buffs (26-3, 14-0 Lone Star) who hit a solid .365 for the match, only committing seven attack errors, while also dominating defensively with 11 total blocks. LCU managed to only hit .081 with 26 attack errors and accounted for just one block.
The first seven points of the match were all delivered by kills, with four different Lady Buffs accounting for WTAMU's points and Amy Edwards contributing three for LCU. A pair of kills by Webster pulled the Lady Chaps to within a couple at 9-7, and a LCU's lone block on the night from Webster and Edwards cut WTAMU's lead to 10-9. Trailing 13-11, LCU was unable to hold the Lady Buff attackers at bay, allowing four kills along with an ace, to give WTAMU an 18-11 edge. The Lady Buffs strung together five more straight points for a commanding 23-12 lead and finishing off the set with a kill by Lexi Davis to win 25-14.
LCU began set two with a 3-1 lead, aided by a kill each from Edwards and Webster. WTAMU quickly closed the gap and took the lead at 6-5 on a kill by Laura Iwuchukwu. Tied at 7-7, the Lady Buffs blocked a Lady Chap attack and hit for two more points to attain a 10-7 advantage. Edwards came through with a kill to cut WTAMU's lead to 12-10, but two kills by Iwuchukwu, a pair of Lady Chap errors and a Lady Buff ace increased the gap to 17-10. A kill and ace by Deterding along with a Webster kill got LCU to within 21-16, but the Lady Buffs ended the set by earning a point on a kill and three more on Lady Chap errors.
The Lady Buffs opened the third set with a 6-1 lead before a pair of Deterding kills and bad set by WTAMU inched LCU closer at 6-4. A kill and ace by Webster pulled the Lady Chaps to within one at 13-12, but the Lady Buffs supplied a kill, a block and earned a point on an LCU attack error to go up 17-13. A Deterding ace and WTAMU attack error sliced the Lady Buff lead to 18-17, but Iwuchukwu answered with a pair of kills. The Lady Buffs then were able to close out the match, 25-19, on two blocks and a kill by Kameryn Hayes.
Between the second and third set, in honor of Veteran's Day, LCU took a few moments to show appreciation for the men and women who have served the country. Current LCU faculty, staff and students gathered on the court to be recognized for their combined 103 years of service.
The Lady Chaps finish off the 2013 season with two matches this week, hosting St. Edward's Thursday at 7 p.m. and McMurry Saturday at noon.
