LUBBOCK, Texas (November 2, 2013) – Lubbock Christian University matched a program record with their fifth consecutive win, holding onto a two-goal lead for a 2-1 Heartland Conference victory at home over Dallas Baptist University Saturday.
Billy Forbes became the beneficiary of a loose ball in the box, as a deflected pass by Chase Williams ended up right at Forbes' boot and he put it into the net for a 1-0 lead to open the game's scoring. The goal occurred in the 31st minute for his 17th goal of the season. LCU increased the lead in the second half, as Mbongeni Ndlovu sent a long cross right to Billy Forbes, who found Ethan Baltier wide open in the right side of the box for his first goal of the season. Baltier's goal in the 74th minute would become crucial, as DBU finally ended LCU goalkeeper Erik Mozzo's bid of a seventh shutout. After hitting the frame on three occasions, the Patriots finally got a ball into the goal in the 88th minute with 2:23 remaining to make things interesting. Seth Elliot notched his fourth goal of the season to end Mozzo's shutout sequence at 292:21. Riley Alvey sent in a long shot from atop the box in the final seconds, but Mozzo denied the equalizer attempt to seal the win.
Forbes led LCU with a three-point game with a goal and an assists. Dallas Baptist led the game in shots (16-14), but LCU had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Mozzo stopped two of three shots in the win, while Chuck Schober allowed two goals on five shots in goal for DBU.
The five straight wins places LCU with a 10-4-1 record overall and 7-1-0 in conference play. It is the first time the Chaps have won five straight games since early in the inaugural 2010 season. DBU fell to 6-9-0 overall and 4-4-0 in conference with the loss. LCU plays their final conference game Monday at noon hosting Oklahoma Christian.
