WICHITA, Kan. (October 19, 2013) - Nick Gorrie notched a two-goal game and Lubbock Christian University collected another shutout in Heartland Conference play with a 3-0 win over Newman University Saturday night at Wilkins Field.
The Chaps have produced shutouts in five games this season and in three of their four conference games played. All three of the conference wins (3-1-0) have been via shutouts and have all been 3-0 decisions.
Gorrie opened the scoring with his third "first goal" of the season, as he netted the opening goal just 6:47 into the contest. Carlos Vela set up the close-range scoring opportunity for Gorrie to give LCU the opening lead. They were able to go into the half with a 2-0 lead, as Stewart MacDonell scored his first goal of the season in the 39th minute. He was assisted on the play by Billy Forbes, who would also play a part in the Chaparrals third goal. In the 62nd minute, Forbes assisted Gorrie's second goal of the game to cap his third career multi-goal game. Gorrie's pair of goals gives him four on the season and 13 in his LCU career.
Forbes' two assists matched a program single-game record for a 15th time and the fourth time he has completed the task to match a single-game career high. LCU out-shot the opposition for just the third time this season, as they dominated the category 11-5, with a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. It was a team shutout for LCU, as no individual will receive credit for the shutout. LCU split their goalkeeping duties, with Tim Saucedo replacing starting keeper Erik Mozzo for the final 17 minutes. Mozzo recorded a first half save for LCU's only save of the game.
LCU improved to 6-4-1 overall on the season with the win, while Newman fell to 0-12-1 overall and 0-5-0 in conference play. The Chaps head to Claremore, Okla. Monday and will face Rogers State University at noon.
