LAREDO, Texas (October 17, 2013) – A career-high 20 kills by Amy Edwards led a Lubbock Christian attack to a season-high .348 hitting percentage in a three-set victory against Texas A&M International on Thursday night. The Lady Chaps won in three tight games by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 28-26.
The string of six wins is a part of the Lady Chaps' eight victories in the nine games. Their last loss of the season dates back to September 26 against UA-Fort Smith. This current set of wins is the longest since the 2011-12 season in which LCU won 11 in a row.
The first point of the match came from Edwards slamming the ball right down the middle, but the Dustdevils took a 10-7 lead on an ace that shanked off of the arms of Kacey Deterding. A perfect spot by Edwards brought the Lady Chaps (11-7, 8-2) to within one at 11-10 before TAMIU (2-16, 1-9) went ahead 14-11 on a ball handling error by Erin Fisher. Two kills by Abby White sparked a 4-0 run which also included an ace by Christa Daniel and a kill by Edwards, knotting the game at 17-all. Trailing 19-18, the duo of Edwards and Tyler Webster combined for four straight kills to take a 22-19 lead. The teams traded points until 23-23, and kills by Fisher and Ariel Froeschl sealed the Lady Chap victory.
In game two, the biggest Lady Chap deficit came at 17-13 on a blocked attack by Fisher. An ace by Dustdevil Lizzie Prieto put the score at 19-16 in favor of TAMIU, but LCU answered with a kill by Fisher and block by Froeschl and Deterding. Daniel served up another ace at the Dustdevils, with the Prieto unable to reach the ball after strangely falling out of her shoe. TAMIU's Miranda Pratt mustered a shot through the block of Edwards and Webster for a 22-21 edge. Behind three kills by Edwards, LCU held the advantage at 25-24, and Ashlyn Broussard subbed in at the right moment to deliver the game-winning point on an ace.
The Lady Chaps never trailed by more than two points in the third set and did not relinquish the lead after a kill by Kelsea Eskew to put LCU ahead 12-11. A bad set and an attack error but the Dustdevils put the Lady Chaps in front 22-17, and Deterding increased the lead one more with a kill. But TAMIU came storming back with three straight kills but a service error bailed out LCU. The Lady Chaps only needed the final point to put away the Dustdevils at 24-21, but the home team came back to tie things at 24-24. Coach Jennifer Lawrence substituted Froeschl into middle front where she immediately made an impact with a kill for a 25-24 Lady Chap lead. Two more kills by Froeschl put LCU at game-point at 27-26 and Edwards fittingly came through with her 20th kill to end the game and match.
White contributed 11 kills for LCU, Deterding added nine and an efficient Froeschl registered eight to go along with an .889 hitting percentage. Fisher recorded 52 assists while Daniel totaled 21 digs.
The Lady Chaps head to San Antonio for a matchup versus St. Mary's on Saturday at noon.
