PORTALES, N.M. (October 3, 2013) – Alysia Carrasco's goal in the 59th minute would go unanswered and Eastern New Mexico prevailed with a 2-1 win over Lubbock Christian University Thursday at ENMU Soccer Field.
Carrasco scored her first goal of the season off a free kick from 40 yards out to break a 1-1 tie. LCU was unable to get anything past Alyxandra Ortiz, who entered the game in the second half and held the Lady Chaps off the scoreboard in the final 45 minutes. LCU had a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second half, but was only able to get one of the shots on goal. ENMU on the other hand was precise with their shots and had all four of their shots in the half on goal.
ENMU opened the game's scoring with Jenna Sievers notching her second goal of the season. She hit the right corner of the net via the first of two assists credited to Renee Romero. The goal came in the 20th minute. Brooke Wendl recorded her 20th career goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute. Wendl, with her second goal of the season, took a touch from Priscilla Brannon and launched a shot from 45 yards out for the goal.
LCU out-shot ENMU 17-13, but the Zias held the advantage in shots on goal with an 8-7 edge. Ortiz garnered the win in net (3-1-2), while the loss went to Lauren Story, who stopped six of eight shots and fell to 3-5-0 on the season.
While the Zias improved to 3-4-2, the Lady Chaps dropped to 3-5-0 on the season and they have lost their second straight game and five of their last six contests. They will look to end the trend Monday, as they head to Odessa, Texas to face Texas-Permian Basin at 2:30 p.m. to begin Heartland Conference play.
