LUBBOCK, Texas (September 14, 2013) – An erratic final match to the 2013 Windmark Insurance Heartland/Lonestar Conference Crossover saw Midwestern State University defeat Lubbock Christian in four sets Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center.

The Lady Chaps' 32 attack errors more than doubled the 15 from the Mustangs and a lowly .072 hitting percentage did not help LCU's cause. A strong first and fourth set from the Lady Chaps (3-6, 1-1 Heartland) was not enough to outperform two dominate middle games delivered by Midwestern (7-1, 0-0 LSC).

Down 7-8 in game one, Amy Edwards and Kacey Deterding each strung together a trio of kills to ignite a 9-0 Lady Chaps run and put LCU out in front 15-9. A service ace by Abby White and kills by Deterding and Tyler Webster moved the advantage to 20-14. The Mustangs made a move at 22-17 with a pair of kills from Marissa Olivares and Beatriz Villalba to creep within three at 22-19, but LCU held their composure while Edwards put the game away at 25-19 with one of her team-high 13 kills.

The second and third sets were disastrous for the Lady Chaps, combining for only 17 points in the two stanzas. Thirteen kills were not enough from LCU, as Midwestern threw down 25 from their side of the court, and the Lady Chaps compiled 15 attack errors compared to only five from the Mustangs. LCU was defeated 25-14 in set two and by a score of 25-13 in the third.

Lubbock Christian came roaring back in the fourth set, earning a 4-1 lead after two kills by Deterding and a service ace by Mallory Powell. LCU steadily increased the lead, pushing it to four on a kill by Kelsea Eskew, then up to five on an Ashlyn Broussard ace and then to six on an Edwards kill. Midwestern elected to take a timeout following two kills from White and a 17-10 Lady Chap lead. Broussard grew LCU's lead to eight after a kill, putting the home team up 20-12. Seemingly in control of the game at 23-16 on a kill by Powell, LCU quickly lost control of the match, giving up successive runs. Trailing 25-24, Ariel Froeschl muscled the ball through a Mustang block to a draw at 25, but a Midwestern tip fell to the floor in front of four Lady Chaps, putting the Mustangs ahead 26-25. With the game and match on the line, MSU's Madelyn Johnson delivered the final blow, sending over a serve that was too much for the Lady Chaps, marking the last point of the tournament.

Powell contributed 38 assists for LCU, while Kyleigh Lucia posted 21 digs for Lubbock Christian.

Caitlin Wallace had a game-high 14 kills, Sarah Rosinke totaled 39 assists, and Johnson registered 22 digs for the Mustangs.

Lubbock Christian hits the road for a pair Heartland Conference contests, facing Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Newman University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
