LUBBOCK, Texas (September 10, 2013) – Erik Luzanilla picked a good time to make his Wayland Baptist University debut. He recorded a hat trick and led the Pioneers to a 3-0 shutout victory over Lubbock Christian University Tuesday at LCU Soccer Field.
Luzanilla couldn't have asked for an easier way to get his first two goals. In the 26th minute, he had a free kick from midfield, which went untouched by everyone in the box and bounced high over the head of LCU goalkeeper Erik Mozzo and into the goal. His second came on a questionable foul in the box on LCU's Cameron Lugo, which was called by the linesman and resulted in a penalty kick conversion by Luzanilla. He claimed the hat trick in the 70th minute, but this time by hard work from atop the box, as he placed a shot into the right side past a diving Mozzo.
The Pioneers kept Mozzo busy with 11 shots on goal. Mozzo stopped 8 of 10 of the Pioneers shot during play (one goal allowed on one penalty kick). WBU out-shot LCU 19-10 overall. The Chaps, who suffered an 11-2 disadvantage in shots-on-goal, did not have their first shot-on-goal until the 71st minute and WBU goalkeeper John-Ramses Thomas stopped both of LCU's chances for his second clean sheet of the season.
The loss was LCU's first of the season and they fall to 1-1-0, while WBU improved to 3-1-1. The meeting between former conference rivals was the first meeting since LCU has joined the NCAA Div. II's Heartland Conference. The Chaps remain home Saturday, and will host Huston-Tillotson University at noon. The game was originally scheduled for 2 p.m., but a change has been made to assist with HTU's travel concerns.
