LIVE SCORING/LIVE VIDEO/GAME NOTES

LUBBOCK, Texas (September 4, 2013) - Lubbock Christian University begins the 2013 season at the 2013 BritKare Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas, on the campus of West Texas A&M. Play begins on Friday for the Lady Chaps at 11 a.m. versus Univ. of Colorado-Colorado Springs, followed by a 3:30 p.m. match versus Incarnate Word. The tournament concludes on Saturday with matches versus 10th-ranked West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. and Western State at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Chaps are coming off of a 23-9 season, including 10-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

 

FAREWELL, NAIA

This season marks the first year LCU will be competing in NCAA Division II's Heartland Conference. After 43 years being in the NAIA and 19 being a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference, the Lady Chaps will begin play in their new conference on September 11 at home, facing Texas A&M International University.

 

OPENING ACTS

LCU head coach Jennifer Lawrence, beginning her 10th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps, is 7-2 in season openers and has won her last five matches when opening a season.  All-time, LCU is 23-11 in season opening matches.

 

YOUTH MOVEMENT

The Lady Chaps begin this season with eight underclassmen on their 12 player roster, including five freshman and three sophomores. Four juniors complete the lineup with no seniors on this year's squad. New additions include Ashlyn Broussard (5-9 OH from Rockwall, Texas), Ariel Froeschl (5-10 MB from League City, Texas), Mallory Powell (5-9 S from Aledo, Texas), Kelsea Eskew (6-0 OH/MB from Fort Morgan, Colo.) and Shelby Mackenzie (5-8 OH/RS/MB from San Antonio, Texas).

 

MOVING ON UP

Lady Chaps head coach Jennifer Lawrence is now the second winningest coach in LCU volleyball history, surpassing her former coach, Dave Carter, with her 214th win on August 25th, 2012, against Southwestern Assemblies of God Univ. Lawrence enters the season with 233 wins and needs 17 more to become the program's all-time leader and top Steven McRoberts.

 

HOST IS FAMILIAR FOE

Tournament host, West Texas A&M, is no stranger to LCU. Saturday's match will be the 33rd meeting between the two teams, with the Lady Buffs holding a sizeable advantage with a record of 23-8-1 over the Lady Chaps. However, LCU perhaps holds the biggest victory between the two, earning a 3-2 victory over the Lady Buffs on September 4, 2010, ending a 46-match home win streak at WTAMU Fieldhouse.

 

NOTES ON THE COMPETITION

The Lady Chaps will face two teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (UC-Colorado Springs and Western State), Lonestar Conference member West Texas A&M, and Division I institution Incarnate Word...Friday signifies the first regular season match for all five squads...LCU has a combined 12-29-1 record versus UCCS, Incarnate Word and West Texas A&M...This will be the first meeting between LCU and Western State.
