LUBBOCK, Texas (May 15, 2013) – No.2 Lubbock Christian University and No.24 University of Houston-Victoria will be battling Wednesday to become one of 10 programs looking to punch their ticket to the Columbus, Ga., which serves as the final site of the 2013 NAIA Softball National Championship. The two teams battle in the Lubbock Christian Bracket of the Opening Round at 1 p.m. at PlainsCapital Park. LCU only has to win one game, while UHV has to defeat LCU twice to advance.

The Lady Chaps quickly advanced to the championship game after defeating Northwood University (Texas) 9-5 and Friends University (Kan.) 8-0. They are ranked No. 2 in the NAIA and are the top seed in the Lubbock bracket with a 57-7 overall record. LCU leads the NAIA in stolen bases per game (3.9), steal attempts per game (4.328), batting average (.380), total hits (637) and total stolen bases (249). Along with leading the NAIA in five statistical categories, LCU is also ranked in the top-10 in 13 other categories. Megan Sullivan leads LCU with 83 hits, batting .449 and has 67 runs-batted-in. Mallory Koschany leads the NAIA in four statistical categories including stolen bases per game (1.078), steal attempts per game (1.156), total steal attempts (74) and total stolen bases (69). Katera Eltsosie is ranked fourth in the NAIA with 28 wins this season.

The Houston-Victoria Jaguars advanced to the championship game of the Lubbock Christian Bracket wining a pair of games on Tuesday. In the first contest UHV downed Northwood University 6-4 advancing them to the semifinal game, where they defeated Friends University 9-7. Houston-Victoria represents the No. 3 seed in the Lubbock bracket and enters the championship game with a 31-21 overall record. After receiving votes in the previous NAIA top-25 poll, they are currently ranked No. 24. The Jaguars are ranked fifth in the NAIA with 19 triples, seventh in hits per game (10) and eighth in total hits with 517. Brittany Arredondo leads HVU with 81 hits batting .443 while Marley Moehrig has 76 runs-batted-in. The Lady Chaps met the Jaguars in the Cowtown Classic on Feb. 15 winning in six innings 8-0.

LCU is 4-0 all-time against UHV.  The Lady Chaps defeated UHV 8-0 Feb.15 in Fort Worth, Texas in their prior meeting. The two teams have only met once in Lubbock, with that meeting resulting in a 12-4 LCU win on Mar. 1, 2008.

If UHV wins the 1 p.m. contest, the two teams will play thirty minutes after the conclusion of the game. The games will be broadcasted on KJAK 92.7 FM with a 1:30 p.m. join in progress broadcast.
