OKLAHOMA CITY (May 3, 2013) – No. 2 Lubbock Christian University was able to keep a slow start in game one from derailing their Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship hopes, as they came back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Oklahoma Baptist University 6-4. They followed by defeating second-seeded No. 5 Oklahoma City University 5-1, placing the Lady Chaps in the Championship Game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at ASA Hall of Fame Complex.
LCU opened the day with Oklahoma Baptist following a first round bye. The Lady Bison scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. In the first inning, Dara Gray doubled in Hannah Morris and Kasey Maddox reached on an error by Megan Sullivan, which scored Maddox. In the fourth inning, Shalee Cordell scored off the bat of LeNae Sanchez and Krystal Johnson scored on a ground out by Katelynn Garrett. The Lady Chaps answered scoring two runs in the fifth inning cutting the deficit in half with Ashton Bell scoring on an error by the pitcher and Faith Koria scoring from third base on a wild pitch. In the sixth inning, LCU would bat around sending 10 batters to the plate. Katlin Reed, Stephanie Rendon, Diana De La Paz and Bell all scored on RBI's by Bell, Kirstie Cochran and Mallory Koschany (2).
Diana De La Paz led the Lady Chaps at the plate going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ashton Bell and Mallory Koschany each had two hits in the game, as well. Dara Gray and Shalee Cordell led the way for the Lady Bison both going 1-for-3 and both driving in a run.
Courtney McGee picked up her 16th win of the year (16-0) for the Lady Chaps pitching 5.1 innings giving up four hits and allowing four runs. Katera Eltsosie collected save number two on the season going 1.2 innings and retiring all five batters she faced (four by strikeouts). For OBU, Hannah Wilbur (11-6) suffered the loss giving up nine hits and allowing all six runs.
In the nightcap, the Lady Chaps faced the Oklahoma City Stars. LCU got on the scoreboard first plating a run in the first inning when McKenzie Clemmons scored on a fielding error by the leftfielder. In the third inning, Mallory Koschany would score on a throwing error by the leftfielder, giving the Lady Chaps a 2-0 lead. The Stars answered with a leadoff home run by LeeAnn Lopez. LCU added two more runs in the fifth inning on a big two-run homerun by Megan Sullivan. Koschany drove in the final Lady Chap run in the sixth inning with a line drive to left centerfield for a 5-1 lead.
McKenzie Clemmons went 2-for-2 scoring two runs and Megan Sullivan was 2-for-4 scoring a run and driving in three more. LeeAnn Lopez led the way for OCU finishing 1-for-3 with her home run.
Jamie Ratliff (20-3) took the loss for the Stars for only her third loss of the season pitching all six innings, allowing nine hits and five runs. Katera Eltsosie (23-4) picked up the win only allowing four hit and the one run.
The two wins Friday places the Lady Chaps in the Championship Game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at ASA Hall of Fame Complex's Stadium Field. LCU only has to win one game to claim their first SAC Tournament title, while their opponent will have to defeat the Lady Chaps twice. With the wins, LCU is now 54-7 on the season.
