OKLAHOMA CITY (May, 4 2013) – After splitting pool play games on Friday, the No. 5 Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals advanced to the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship game. They will face Oklahoma City University with first pitch at 1 p.m. from Jim Wade Stadium on the campus of Oklahoma City University, seeking their first SAC Tournament title since 2009.
The Chaps are 41-15 going into Saturday's contest. The Chaps lead the NAIA in eight different statistical categories. They are ranked first in the NAIA in total doubles (142), doubles per game (2.536), home runs per game (1.196), runs scored per game (7.982), runs batted in per game (7.554), total runs batted in (423), slugging percentage (.563) and total hits (609). Individually, Brett Kauten leads the NAIA with 17 home runs this season and Joel Lutz is ranked second in the NAIA with 15 home runs on the season. Christian Vazquez is ranked second in the NAIA with a team leading 86 hits. LCU leads the SAC in runs-batted-in per game with 7.55 and batting average (.343).
En route to the championship game, the Stars defeated Mid-America Christian University 4-2, Rogers State University 9-7 and University of Science and Arts Oklahoma 4-2. The Stars took the four-game regular season series sweep over LCU on May 12-13. They are 47-10 on the season and finished SAC play 23-5. The Stars are ranked first in two statistical category and are ranked in the top-10 in 11 categories. They lead the NAIA with total triples (27) and fielding percentage (.978). Jonathan Rodriguez has a team leading 63 hits this season, while Kale Gaden has 51 runs-batted-in. OCU also leads the SAC in fielding percentage (.978) earned run average (2.92) and opposing batting average (.211).
