LUBBOCK, Texas (April 27, 2013) - No. 5 Lubbock Christian University plays the last nine inning game against Wayland Baptist University for the final regular season game Saturday at 2 p.m. and it closes out a four-game Sooner Athletic Conference series at Hays Field. The Chaps will honor seven seniors playing in their final home game this season prior to the game.
In Friday's matchup, a program single-game record nine home runs occured and the two teams combined for 14 home runs, as LCU won the second game of a doubleheader 20-16 to clinch second place in the conference. The game followed a 7-3 Pioneer victory in the opener at Wilder Field moving the series to 2-1. The Chaps had a trio of home runs from Brett Kauten and Joel Lutz in the second game, and also received homers from Christian Vazquez, Brandon Wilson and Wigberto Nevarez. Kauten had four homers in the doubleheader and 10 RBI.
The Chaps moved to 38-14 with the doubleheader split Friday and 18-9 in the SAC. Statistically, LCU leads the NAIA in total doubles (134), doubles per game (2.577), runs scored per game (8.269), runs-batted-in per game (7.846), batting average (.350), total RBI (408) and slugging percentage (.578). Christian Vazquez continues to lead the Chaps in hits with 83 ranking him second in the NAIA. Joel Lutz team leading 60 RBI ranks him 5th in the NAIA and his 15 home runs on the season is second. Brett Kauten is ranked first in NAIA with 17 home runs and has a team leading 24 stolen bases. On the mound, Derek Loera has 77 strike outs, averaging 9.16 a game and has a 3.30 ERA. As a team the Chaps have 580 hits, 408 RBI and 67 home runs this season. The Chaps lead the SAC in batting average (.350) and runs-batted-in per game (7.85) and are second in fielding percentage (.969).
Wayland Baptist is 19-33 on the season and 10-16 in conference play. Johnny Hendrixson leads the charge for the Pioneers ranked second in the NAIA in total doubles (25), fourth in doubles per game (.490), 13th in total triples (5) and 14th with 109 total bases. On the mound, Tom Bailey has 56 total strike outs and a 4.24 ERA this season. The Pioneers have 446 hits, 254 runs-batted-in and 26 home runs.
Saturday's game will be the final SAC regular season game for the Chaparrals and the final SAC regular season meeting against WBU.
