ARDMORE, Okla. (April 23, 2013) – No. 4 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals golf team improved by four strokes from its first to second round and finished the Sooner Athletic Conference Golf Championships in second place Tuesday. Mariah Montoya jumped five spots and claimed third place after shooting 158 (83,75) at the par-70 Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club.


Mariah Montoya posted her first top-five finish this season as her second round 75 was the lowest recorded score in the second round of the tournament by four strokes (only three players had sub-80 scores in the second round). Anna Schopp carded rounds of 85 and 81 for a 166 and improved by four strokes moving her up six spots to put her in a share of eighth place. Shelbye Hill recorded two rounds of 83 for a 166 total, putting her in a share of eighth place with Schopp. After a first round 80, Sinae Montoya dropped six spots landing in 13th place carding a round two 89 for a 169 total. Kelsey Garcia rounded out the Lady Chaps team in a share of 18th place, improving two strokes in round two (90-88, 178). Mariah Montoya, Sinae Montoya and Hill each recorded two birdies in two rounds of play. Mariah Montoya led the field with 22 pars, while Anna Schopp recorded 19.


After building a 17-shot lead after round one, Oklahoma City University was out of reach, winning their 11th SAC championship in 13 years shooting a team total 634. The Lady Chaps finished 24-shots behind OCU, but was able to pass Wayland Baptist University, who finished third 8-shots back of the Lady Chaps with a team total 666. Rogers State University came in fourth with a 696, while Oklahoma Baptist round out the field with a 723.


Elia Folch of Oklahoma City University took first place in the individual field firing rounds of 75 and 80 for a 155. OCU's Tanya Tibshraeny came in second place with a 157 (78,79). Jessica Schiele came in fourth place for OCU (77-82, 159) and Wayland Baptist's Nathalia Valencia rounded out the top-five carding a 161 (78,83).


The Lady Chaps will now await an at-large bid and an expected invite to the 2013 NAIA National Championship Tournament at Lincoln, Neb.'s Wilderness Ridge Golf Club, which begins May 21.
