LUBBOCK, Texas (April 20, 2013) – For the fifth consecutive year, the Lubbock Christian University softball team has won at least a share of the regular season title. By completing the series sweep over Mid-America Christian University Saturday at PlainsCapital Park, the No. 2 Lady Chaps clinched their fourth out-right conference regular season title beating the Lady Evangels 11-1 and 10-2 in a pair of five-inning run-rule shortened contest.
The Lady Evangels got two hits in game one with both coming in the first inning, the second scoring their lone run of the game when Kenna McCoy came home off the bat of Carson Osborne. The Lady Chaps scored in all four innings they batted, with the first two runs coming in the first inning. Mallory Koschany scored on a single by McKenzie Clemmons, who would score from third base two batters later on a wild pitch. Ashton Bell homered in the second inning to put LCU up 3-1. Five more runs were added in the third inning by the Lady Chaps off four hits and three errors by MACU. Megan Sullivan, Stephanie Rendon, Bell and Koschany all produced hits, with Bell hitting her second home run of the game. In their final inning to bat, the Lady Chaps plated three more runs. Rendon doubled in a run and Courtney McGee homered plating the last two. Bell finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 with two home runs driving in four runs-batted-in. Koschany, Sullivan and Rendon each had two-hit ball games. MACU was led at the plate by Osborne who finished 1-for-2 driving in one run.
Amanda Longorio (7-2) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Chaps striking out six on two hits and allowing one run. For the Lady Evangels, Jackie Hiltebran (5-7) would suffer the loss pitching 3.1 innings allowing eight hits and eight runs. Tiffany Holt also saw action for MACU going 0.2 innings giving up three hits and three runs.
In game two, the Lady Chaps scored two runs in the first inning with leadoff batter Kirstie Cochran scoring from third base on a passed ball and McKenzie Clemmons scoring on a shot through the right side off the bat of Latainna Eltsosie. The Lady Evangels scored a run in the third inning scoring Kenna McCoy off a single to right field by Jackie Hilterbran. The Lady Chaps answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With one runner on and two outs, the Lady Chaps plated all four runs. Ashton Bell singled to centerfield scoring Clemmons and Eltsosie. Shlay Dennison hit a ball to right field plating Stephanie Rendon. Katlin Reed doubled in Bell putting LCU up 6-1. In the fourth inning, both teams scored a run. In the top half, the Lady Evangels scored on a solo home run over the centerfield fence from Carson Osborne. For the Lady Chaps, Clemmons scored on a sacrifice fly to deep right field off the bat of Eltsosie. In the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs and no one on base, the Lady Chaps led 7-2 and garnered the three runs needed to end the game via the run-rule. Faith Koria, Cochran and Clemmons each bunted for a base hit to load the bases. Sullivan walked for the first run and Eltsosie singled down the left field line to score the final two runs and end the game in a walk-off.
Clemmons, Eltsosie and Koria finished the game perfect from the plate with Clemmons going 3-for-3 with four runs scored, Eltsosie went 3-for-3 with a run scored and four runs-batted-in and Koria finished 2-for-2 with a run scored. Hilterbran led MACU with a 2-for-3 performance driving in one run.
Tori Bayer (4-0) started the game pitching and picked up the win, going three innings, striking out three batters and allowing three hits leading to a pair of runs. Lauren Hardin pitched the final two innings and did not allow any runs to score off one hit. Kelcie Wolf (1-12) took the loss for the Lady Evangels going 4.2 innings giving up 14 hits and allowing 10 runs to score.
With the series sweep, the Lady Chaps improve to 48-7 on the season and they wrap up conference play 22-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Mid-America Christian University fell to 10-30 overall, 0-20 in SAC play. The conference regular season title for the sixth-year Lady Chaps program is their fourth out-right regular season title. The Lady Chaps will host the Falcons of the University of Texas-Permian Basin Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at PlainsCapital Park on LCU's campus.
