LUBBOCK, Texas (March 22, 2013) – The No.16 Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals and University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma split a doubleheader to open a four-game Sooner Athletic Conference series with LCU falling 5-4 in the opener and winning 11-2 in the second game Friday in LCU's first home conference series at Hays Field this season.
The opening game loss placed LCU at 0-3 on the season when playing in the first game to open a home series. LCU led 1-0 after a Kevin Domrzalski single in the second inning scored Joel Lutz from second base. USAO would respond with a four-run fourth inning off four hits, with Heath Wilda's lead-off double starting the Drovers scoring surge in the inning. LCU answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and then received a bases-loaded two-run double from Tanner Rainey. The rally came to a screeching halt as a fielder's choice, strikeout and groundout would end the inning and prevent the Chaps from taking the lead. That would become vital, as USAO scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning with Jared Coon scoring on a wild pitch. LCU had the tying run aboard in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Josh Goodman would survive for the save and USAO won the opener 5-4. It was Goodman's fourth save of the season.
Christian Vazquez was 2-for-4 for LCU. Brennyn Smith had his hit streak come to an end at 18 games. Wilda went 3-for-4 in the win for USAO. Chris Fischer claimed the win and improved to 2-1 on the season, while Derek Loera suffered the loss going 6.1 innings to fall to 6-2.
LCU responded in the second game with a five-run first inning. The Chaps batted around in the inning, with five hits produced and two errors committed by the Drovers defense. Domrzalski, who started the scoring in the first game, hit a two-run double to left-centerfield to highlight the scoring in the inning. USAO would attempt a comeback in the fourth inning with Robert Summers (single) and Coon (double) leading off the inning with hits and they would eventually score to cut LCU's lead to 5-2. LCU put the game out of reach with a three-run fifth and three-run sixth inning. Brennyn Smith led off the fifth inning with a triple and two runs were scored on a Jason Fisch double. Brett Kauten hit a lead-off double off the right field wall in the sixth inning and Wigberto Nevarez followed an RBI-single from Smith with a two-run home run over the left field wall to cap the Chaps scoring.
Smith led LCU with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Wigberto was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in and Fisch also had two hits (2-for-4) and drove in a pair of runs. Lutz would reach base in each game and now reached base safely in all 29 games played this season. Blake McMullen suffered his first loss of the season (7-1) on the mound for the Drovers. He allowed eight runs (six earned) in 4.2 innings. Kyle Forsyth improved to 6-0 with the win and allowed two runs off seven hits in a complete game outing.
LCU moved to 23-6 overall and 5-1 in SAC play, while USAO went to 26-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The two teams will complete the conference four-game series Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Hays Field.
