LUBBOCK, Texas (March 22, 2013) – After playing their first 35 games away from home, the No.6 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals opened their home schedule with a pair of Sooner Athletic Conference victories, defeating No.13 St. Gregory's 9-1 (in five innings) and 6-2 Friday afternoon at PlainsCapital Park to extend their win streak to 17 games.
Game one of the afternoon featured a five-inning run rule win for the Lady Chaps. St. Gregory's Tara Nall was the only player to reach base for the Cavaliers, as she hit a home run in the third and was walked in the fifth inning. The Lady Chaps trailed 1-0 until getting on the board in the third inning when McKenzie Clemmons singled up the middle for an RBI and Ashton Bell scored to make the score 1-1 at the end of the third inning. The bats were rolling in the fourth inning as the Lady Chaps scored eight runs on seven hits. Stephanie Rendon and Katlin Reed were the first to score in the fourth inning when Diana De La Paz doubled to left center field. The Cavaliers would make a pitching change after Bell singled down the left field line but it would not stop the bleeding. De La Paz scored on a Faith Koria RBI followed by a Clemmons two-run single. Megan Sullivan doubled down the left field line to score Clemmons before Courtney McGee stepped up and hit a two-run home run for a 9-1 lead. Katera Eltsosie would get the win moving her overall record to 14-3 and Devon Frazier collected her first loss of the season (10-1). Eltsosie allowed just one hit in five innings, while striking out seven batters. Along with McGee's two RBI, LCU received a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI from Clemmons.
In the second game of action, SGU was able to load the bases in the third inning and scored a run when pitcher Courtney McGee walked a batter. LCU would get out of the jam forcing the Cavs to strand the bases loaded. Ashton Bell came up big for a double up the middle to score pinch runner Kirstie Cochran in the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1. Latainna Eltsosie stepped up to the plate in a five-run fifth inning and hit a first-pitch double to the fence to score Katlin Reed. Diana De La Paz singled to right-centerfield scoring Eltsosie. Bell continued her solid performance with a double scoring Stephanie Rendon. Megan Sullivan would wrap up the inning with a two run double to left field scoring Mallory Koschany and Faith Koria. SGU would try to answer in the seventh inning, but the Lady Chaps held them to two hits and one run with two left on base to end the game 6-2. McGee would stay perfect in the circle giving her an 8-0 overall record and SGU's Allison Conyers fell to 4-1. Sullivan was 3-for-4 with two runs driven in and Bell was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
LCU improves to 31-6 overall and 5-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. St. Gregory's University falls to 19-4 overall and 0-2 in SAC play. The Lady Chaps will return to action Saturday from PlainsCapital Park with first pitch of the doubleheader at noon to complete the four-game series with St. Gregory's University.
